“What?” Xander’s mom said, caught by surprise. “Of course you are. Can you not see this?”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” said Xander. He took a step forward to allow the rainbow to continue past him. The light struck the side of the house.

“I’m gonna go get my camera,” his mom said. She ran back into the house. Xander stayed in place for another few seconds. Then he bolted back to the bushes.

“What was that?” he yelled.

“Sorry,” said Cradie. “That was me.”

“Yeah,” said Xander. “I figured. You yell ‘Cradie’ when you barf.”

“That’s how we got our Earth names,” said Cradie. “You should hear Blep.”

“Did your mom see us?” asked Blep.

“No, but she will,” said Xander. “Get back up to the mountaintop. I’ll meet you there in an hour.”

The unicorns stood up. They galloped up the mountainside, quickly disappearing into the thick forest. Once they were out of sight, Xander heard his mom open the back door of the house once again. He exhaled in relief. Now he just had to figure out a way to explain the large horselike teeth marks in the leftover carrots.
