CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Lights flashed in sync with the beat while the dancefloor bucked and gyrated as one sensual beast comprising the throng of young bodies, vampires, demons, even the odd angel among them, gathered at The Incubus for mutual release. I observed from a safe distance at the bar, a neglected martini in hand. A woman died right there, I thought, gazing over towards the center of the room. And now a sea of magicals drowned the imprint of that ugly moment in a pungent musk of carnality and expressed youth. Gross.

I only watched to pass the time, awaiting a glimpse of the man I came to see. Ace. The laconic security guard with a penchant for tailing me. After the fight on the bridge, I reflected on his presence, the faint sensations of his magic’s air. It didn’t take long before I pieced together that he was the same man I failed twice to catch.

But now I knew where I could find him. On a Friday night, when he was sure to be working, I came bearing questions. Without Cash at my side to pull me back, I was going to make sure Ace would cough up the answers for me. He might have been thrice my size, but my determination dwarfed his strength. My own past showed me the ways determination multiplied ability. Not that I expected a fight. Ace showed himself to be an ally. Now was the time for him to commit to our allegiance.

After an hour or so nursing my drink and scanning the room, Ace showed me up by sneaking into the neighboring stool unnoticed. “I assume you’ve come for me.”

I took a moment before turning to face him, settling my nerves after he jangled them. I didn’t want to show that he’d caught me off guard. “That’s right,” I said when I finally met his gaze. His immense form looked almost comical perched on that stool, like a gargoyle on the edge of a church roof. “You owe me an explanation.”

He raised his eyebrows. “Owe you? Didn’t I save your life?”

I scoffed, the sound a little more pronounced than I meant it to be. Perhaps I should have eaten before coming here. The martini’s effect came on slow, without warning. Nevertheless, I retained my indignation. “Please, the Shade didn’t come to murder us,” I contested. “Merely scare us off.”

“And did they?”

I shook my head emphatically. “Never.”

“Good.”

I squinted and leaned closer, scrutinizing his stony face. “Why is that good? I mean, I know why it’s good from my perspective, but what’s this all matter to you?”

He raised his arm and the bartender, a hot young thing with auburn hair and a hairline tattoo reading “vampire” in calligraphy (eye roll), appeared. “Two shots,” he requested. “Tequila.” Then he pointed at me.

“Tequila’s fine.”

“Two tequilas.”

She poured the shots, lit them on fire, then slid them across the bar to us. Ace extinguished the flame of his shot, but I chose to show off, throwing back the fire with the booze.
