CHAPTER 12

Disappointment sat like a weight in my chest after I released my magical connection to Hecate. Her ancient wisdom, while profound and illuminating, had left me with an unsettling sense of helplessness and forlornness. Despite the vast reservoirs of power coursing through my veins, I had learned nothing that could help me defeat Mardella.

I couldn’t shake the feeling of frustration that clawed at my senses. The silence that followed our conversation echoed in the depths of my being, leaving me with a hollow ache. The path ahead seemed to be shrouded in shadows, and I grappled with a sense of inadequacy. My seemingly-formidable powers felt inconsequential against those of our adversary.

The frustration gave way to a quiet desolation, a feeling of being adrift in a sea of uncertainty. I had sought answers, a weapon, anything that could pierce the veil of the Dark Witch’s secrets, yet I was left empty-handed. The realization that, despite all my power, I possessed nothing that could directly combat the looming threat left me vulnerable.

I knew I didn’t have much time as we had to find Marlin’s team and track any hybrids left loose on Spirit Falls. “I spoke with Hecate. She didn’t have any new information really, but said we can’t let Mardella get her hands on Caleb. If she got control of Sphinx, it would be disastrous. She left pretty abruptly.”

Daryn got out of the vehicle, and I followed him. “I wasn’t planning on letting her near your son.”

He had parked the vehicle in front of the bookstore, its gray-and-white square facade standing stoically against the quiet backdrop of the empty street. The large glass windows showcased the literary wonders within, but the absence of bustling activity at this late hour was noticeable. In the fading light, the OPEN sign lit the window, its warm glow a stark contrast to the stillness outside.

Lia’s store, with its vibrant floral display, stood just two doors down. However, her closed sign hinted at an unusual quietness that extended beyond the walls of her shop. As I glanced around, not a single car drove down the usually-busy street.

The sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows that played on the pavement. And the hushed street seemed frozen in time, a peculiar calm settling over what should have been a lively scene. The stillness unnerved me, and a sense of nervous anticipation lingered in the air.

A shout rang out, and we were running toward the growls emanating from the corner.

My heart pounded in my chest as I sprinted down the side street, the echo of my footsteps bouncing off the cement sidewalk. Daryn’s voice echoed in my ear before I skidded to a sudden halt, my eyes widening in shock.

The three-headed demon hybrid that had previously slipped from our grasp growled as its six eyes fixated on me. It was a monstrous entity with an otherworldly presence that sent ice racing through my veins. My breath stuttered as I came face-to-face with the embodiment of my nightmares.
