Prepare

By the end of 2018, I was emotionally weary, financially depleted, spiritually empty, and physically exhausted, and my family was dragging itself into the new year. We decided to head to our favorite mountain getaway in New Mexico and jumped at the chance to take the eleven-hour road trip. But two days before we headed out, something unprecedented happened: the sky opened up and dumped forty-two inches of snow in twenty-four hours.

As we waited for the roads to reopen, we dug out puffy jackets, found missing gloves, and called about snow chains. We prepared for the journey. Doing anything less would have been careless and unwise because when you’re changing your view, climbing new heights, and taking risks, you have to prepare for the adventure. Our spiritual journeys need the same consideration before we trek into the unknown. We need courage, tenacity, and wisdom for the mountains ahead. Mark Udall says, “You don’t climb mountains without a team, you don’t climb mountains without being fit, you don’t climb mountains without being prepared, and you don’t climb mountains without balancing the risks and rewards. And you never climb a mountain on accident—it has to be intentional.”1

God doesn’t dare us to dream or ask us to face an impossible mountain alone. He invites us. He equips us. He goes with us. James 1:5–7 says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord.”

When I read these verses, I think of faith. That’s what we’re really talking about, isn’t it? Hebrews 11:1–2, the great faith chapter, tells us, “The fundamental fact of existence is that this trust in God, this faith, is the firm foundation under everything that makes life worth living. It’s our handle on what we can’t see” (Message). We will dig deeper into Hebrews 11 a little later, but we must understand that faith is what we hope will happen but don’t presently see.
