Atlanta celebrated Pride in October, but with most other cities celebrating it in June, Atlanta and its residents had started to feel left out every summer, and decided to start hosting a smaller parade that would give the LGBT community a sense of inclusion with the rest of the country. For the last several years, the Redbirds had maintained a presence at the parade, and as she stood behind the float in front of her and waited for the parade to begin, Aubrey was happy to see a few of her co-workers had come out to participate on behalf of the Redbirds. She was joined by Alfred, Hank, and Jonathan, as well as Monica, a graphic designer on the Marketing team; Francine, the Director of Community Outreach; and only two players: Roman Jenkins, and second year defensive back Tremaine "TJ" Jackson. Aubrey didn't know every single player on the team, but she knew TJ: he'd walked around the complex one day not long after arriving in Atlanta and introduced himself to everyone he saw, from the custodians and cafeteria staff to the executives on the top floor. Since then, Aubrey had kept an eye out for him, and noticed how he fit in with the rest of the guys, but wasn't pressured to. Sometimes, when the guys would go out on the town and document their every move on social media, TJ would be in the picture, smiling and confident, and other times he’d post a picture from home, hugged up with his wife and two-year old daughter.

"TJ." Aubrey reached out her fist. "Thanks for coming. I started to say I'm surprised to see you here, but actually I'm not."

"I appreciate you saying that," TJ said. "Some of the other guys asked me why I was coming. I asked them 'Why not?'"

"Well, we appreciate it. How's the ankle?"

TJ looked down his left leg and shook it. "Pretty good, I think. Almost 100%. I'm ready to get back on the field."

"I bet," Aubrey said. "Just take your time. We need you out there this year, but not at the expense of you not being completely healed and risking further injury."

"I will. Hey, I heard that you're not just the money woman. Roman says that you know a lot about football.”

"I know enough to get by." Aubrey winked.

"I think you know more than that. You should come kick it with the defense sometime. Every time you come to practice, you're either exercising or watching the offense."

TJ was right: she barely watched the defensive side of the ball during practice, probably because they were in good hands. Mack Holloway had been a defensive coach in some capacity in the league for the last thirty years, and a good one. He and his defense was one of the bright spots for the Redbirds, something the team could build from. The Redbirds defense only gave up an average of 14.2 points last season. The offense on the other hand, was terrible, and often, fourteen points was enough for the other team to win the game.
