It wasn’t a scar my eyes cast upon when I walked in on Gemma. She was a quick liar, but it only made me want to know what she was hiding. Clearly, I wouldn’t do anything to jeopardize our standings, but there was something off.

A swirl of revolt swarmed my stomach, remembering how she flinched from me. Never in my life would I hurt a woman, so it only caused me to wonder who had hurt her. If it had been a dog attack, then I could see the fear being there, but there was too much unknown.

There’d be time to figure it all out, but I didn’t like what I was sensing. All of us knew Belinda helped girls who needed to get back on their feet. Was she one of them, or was she just someone who booked her Airbnb?

Turmoil painted her expression every so often, enough for me to pick up on it. After dinner, Gemma went into the living room with Hallie to watch a Barbie movie. They had been Hallie’s latest obsession. I was just glad we moved on from Frozen. There was only so much letting go I could do.

Justin left to hide in his room again, being the predictable teen. His eyeliner had been thicker today, and I noticed when Gemma told him that she liked it. The boy tried to be nonchalant about the compliment, but we could all see the smile he tried evading.

Happiness could be contagious, and this woman helped bring it out in the kids who hadn’t smiled in almost a year. Sipping my beer on the loveseat, I observed how natural Gemma was with the kids. She didn’t have any of her own, but she was very good with them at their different ages.

Callum was on the other side of his daughter, pretending not to notice what I was. Being closer, he watched the movie, but I could see how his ear only listened to the conversation on the side.

For her first night of being here, she was already making an undeniable connection with the kids and showing how valuable she was going to be. Fate was a funny thing with how she played out the way she did with Gemma in our lives. She was the one who consoled Justin about his mom, and then she did the same for Hallie. She moved into town that morning, coming to start over from Lenae’s guidance. My heart hurt for her at the mention of her friend because we all knew her well too.

The woman had been in our lives since we were young. Until she moved out of state for college to take on her new adventure. Going into business, she came back home and helped her mother run the diner to keep them afloat better. No one was prepared for the phone call that Noey had driven them off the road. The same road she drove every day, knowing the bend she flew off of without any weather issues.
