GLORIANA

Lenox’s sister is as short as the Summer fairy princess Fleur. But that’s where the similarities end. Fleur’s blonde-and-blue-eyed appearance reminds me of sunlight, while Mackenzie’s dark eyes and raven hair pulled up in a messy ponytail remind me of twilight.

I find her pretty and friendly. When she smiles, showing dimples, it makes me smile too as she leads me down the long hallway, then takes a sharp left and exits. Bright light blinds me, and I shield my eyes, immediately noticing the temperature drop.

Goose bumps rise on my skin. I crinkle my eyes and peek between my fingers. The first color I see is green. I blink, letting my vision adjust, and open my mouth, popping the pressure in my ears.

This property, fenced in by tall evergreen trees, makes me feel like we’re at the top of the mountain. Wolves of all shapes and sizes appear along the edges of the forest. Flashes of yellow magic sparkle as the wolves turn into males, making the forest come alive.

The people are making their way across the meadow, heading somewhere on my right, but I can’t see where, for the wall next to me blocks the view. Mackenzie stands with her back to the forest. Her eyes are not those of a wolf. They’re elven. Dark, wide, then tapering at the corners.

“Come on. Let’s eat, and I’ll show you around the den.” She turns and marches across the meadow.

My bare feet land on coarse, rich grass that’s definitely not an elven carpet. Pausing, I curl my toes. Seldom used to walking barefoot and rarely outside my chambers, I’m a bit out of sorts, though don’t say anything, because Mackenzie isn’t wearing shoes either. Besides, she’s walking so quickly that if I don’t hurry along, I might lose her in the crowd.

Or not.

It now occurs to me that every other person in the meadow is a male wolf. A nude male wolf.

It’s getting crowded as I near a wide entrance that leads to a massive square structure that might be a fortress. Or what they call a den.

Mackenzie turns and sighs, then walks back and threads her fingers through mine again. She’s practically dragging me. “Come on. I don’t want to miss breakfast, and the night patrol got in ahead of us, which means they’ll eat everything.”

“Is that who these men are? Night patrol?”

Mackenzie stops and levels me with a stare. “There are no men here. Even our weakest omega is ten times stronger than a man.”

“I apologize for the offense.” It is a slip I learned from Father’s court. Lycans are proud creatures, and strength is a measure of their worth. I know better. Damn it.

“We are males and females,” Mackenzie says as we keep walking.

Once we’re almost at the entrance, the wolves start turning, their noses wrinkling and lifting. A sea of blue eyes brightens like lanterns, and the males start growling low in their throats.

Mackenzie pauses, chewing her lip.

“What’s wrong?” I grip her slender but firm biceps.

“They’re smelling your heat, I think.
