“Thanks?” Prescilla smirked at me. “Do you think Amy meant to turn on the lusty stuff?”

“I’m not sure.” I shrugged again. “But whatever she did, she didn’t stick around to watch the results. Which… feels kind of wrong to me.”

I looked down at the carton of ramen in my hands and was suddenly ravenous. I began stuffing food into my mouth. Probably faster than I should have. I didn’t even pause for a mouthful of milk.

“Yeah, what happened when she disappeared?” she asked. “Since Meemo was holding me down, I didn’t see everything.”

“She…” I cast my mind back. God, was that only two days ago? It felt like it’d been forever. “She turned back into her human form and threatened Grayson.”

“And?” Prescilla prompted when I got lost in the taste of the ramen.

“Oh! And then she said her love was calling her, and she just disappeared.”

“Disappeared?”

“Like… turned to mist, and then the mist was gone.” I furrowed my brow, thinking it over. “Except that the entire process took less than a second. She was there, and we had her pinned down, and then she was gone.”

“Weird,” Prescilla returned to eating some more of her own dinner.

I went back to eating, barely pausing for a breath. I hadn’t realized just how hungry I was. Which was kind of weird since the only thing I’d done yesterday was go to the library…

A thought hit me, and I jumped up, rushing into the living room. “Where is it?” I asked.

The other guys looked up from the kitchen table, perplexed.

“The book I was reading.” I clarified. “I think it might be cursed.”

“Well that would certainly explain it,” Grayson muttered, but not quietly enough that I didn’t hear. I didn’t have time to address that right now, though.

“Where’s the book?” I asked again, looking around. “I need the book.”

“It’s next to the door where you dropped it when you came in,” Cary said before standing. “I’ll get it for you.”

“No!” I shook my head. “If I’m right… I don’t want anyone else touching it.”

“What’s he talking about?” Meemo asked.

“I don’t understand what’s going on either,” Prescilla said as she came from the bedroom, the tray of food in her hands.

“When we were at the library, he read a biography on one of the Nubian Queens,” Grayson explained.

But already, I wasn’t listening to them anymore. I ran to the front door and grabbed the book, flipping it over and inspecting every inch of the cover.

When I couldn’t identify anything suspicious, I opened it up and began examining it page by page. Surely there was something wrong with this book! It was the only one that I alone touched.

As I was flipping through pages, an illustration caught my eye. I stared at it before my hands began shaking.

Fuck.
