15 The application of proof and inspectors’ marks, from Vorschrift für die Stempelung der Pistole 08 nebst einer Zeichnung, 1911.
PROOF AND INSPECTORS MARKS, 1911
The pistols were assembled and blued, but then dismantled to enable the parts to be gauged. Most of the pieces were assessed by eye, though critical dimensions were checked with special measuring equipment.
The parts had already been numbered. The Vorschrift indicates their prescribed positions, ‘26a’ on the drawings; the full number was stamped on the receiver, the frame and the barrel, with the last two digits on the breech-block, the extractor, the striker, both toggle links, the hold-open (if present), the dismantling catch, the trigger, the trigger plate, the sear-bar, the safety bar, the safety lever, and both grips. Final assembly was then checked by a government inspector and signified by the central of the three crowned-letter marks struck into the front right side of the receiver.
Once the guns had been dismantled, specific tests were undertaken. 1, the installation of the barrel was checked. 2, the milling of the front sight was approved. Inspectors approved the hardness of 3, the receiver; 4, the ejector; 5, the sear-bar; 6, the breech-block; 7, the ejector; 8, the striker; 9, the firing-pin spring retainer; 10 and 11, both toggle links; 12, the spring lever; 13, the spring connector; 14, the spring guide; 15, the frame; 15a, the hold-open if present; 16, the locking bolt; 17, the trigger; and 18, the trigger lever.
Once this work had been satisfactorily completed, the principal inspector’s mark was struck into the receiver – the first of the three crowned letters struck into the front right side next to the proof eagle. The milling and fitting (19) of the trigger plate was checked. The hardness of the magazine release (20) was approved. The assembly of the magazine was checked (21), the magazine base was stamped with the serial number (21a), and the base-piece was approved (21b). The hardness of the safety blade and lever was approved, 22 and 23 respectively. The fit of the grips was approved (24) and, lastly, the hardness of the grip screws was approved (25).
These parts all received crowned-letter marks. The 4.2mm version was restricted to the inside of the grips, and the 3.2mm pattern was struck into the barrel, receiver, breech-block, toggle links, frame, trigger plate, magazine and magazine base plate. The remainder were all 2mm types.
Re-assembled guns were fired with two super-power proof rounds to ensure they were sufficiently strong, whereafter the proof eagles or Beschussadler were struck into the top right side of the barrel, the front right side of the receiver and the left side of the breech-block (26b on the drawing).
Two magazines – sixteen rounds – were then expended during a rapid-fire test and accuracy was assessed. Pistols that were acceptable received a third inspector’s mark on the right side of the receiver (26c), nearest the proof eagle, and the land-to-land calibre was stamped into the underside of the barrel. Inspection marks were struck into the cleaning rod and turn-screw, and ‘+’ was applied to the reserve magazine.
