12 • In a competition held by the RLM, the Heinkel He 118 competed against prototypes built by Arado and Junkers. The aircraft shown is a He 118 V1 (D-UKYM) which was unarmed and resembled a small He 111. It was fitted with a Rolls-Royce Buzzard engine. Ernst Udet crashed in one of these, following which only a handful more were built.

13 • Focke-Wulf developed a well-armoured conversion of its highly respected Fw 189 reconnaissance aircraft. The prototype was armed with six machine guns and cannons to support German ground units on the battlefield. However, because the Henschel Hs 129 performed at higher speed and had heavier armament, this particular Fw 189 project was cancelled.
