CHAPTER 13

The day after Rory stood up Chloe, she texted Heidi to tell her what had happened. But before Chloe could even get into the specifics of her first disastrous date with Jackson, Heidi begged her to meet her in person.

“I can’t stay in the house any longer,” Heidi said in her text. “Dave keeps trying to make me stay inside because he’s so worried about the babies, but I need out! Let’s go back to Bejewels and you can tell me everything.”

Chloe agreed to it, and that evening, the two women met up at the restaurant.

As Heidi slid into the chair with a grunt and a groan, Chloe noted that her friend somehow looked even more pregnant now, which concerned her. Heidi wasn’t supposed to be getting this big so soon, but somehow she had become literally enormous.

All Chloe could do was hope the supernatural doctors were doing their job and keeping an eye on her friend. She knew Heidi kept complaining about Dave hovering over her and her frustration with it, but she could commiserate with the demon-dad-to-be now that she’d seen Heidi’s size. Hopefully the delivery went as smoothly as possible. She couldn’t bear the thought of her bestie having any complications.

“No way,” Heidi said, her jaw hanging open when Chloe finished telling her about her third and last date. “He just stood you up like that? I thought Pookahs were only supposed to engage in fun, harmless pranks, not ones that make you waste an evening of your life.”

“I thought so, too,” Chloe said sadly, poking at her food with her fork. “I so hoped that in one of those guys I might have found someone to at least fool around with for a little while. Maybe my standards are too high, maybe it’s my fault and not theirs.” She gulped, imagining her future filled with the same lame type of men.

“Hold the phone,” Heidi said, stopping her negative musing. “This is the furthest thing from your fault! You just somehow got paired up with three of the dudiest duds in all of dudsville!”

“Right, but who picked them out of the lineup of guys at the speed dating night?” Chloe asked her best friend. “I could have chosen so many other men, but instead fate and those blasted number cards chose those three for me. Doesn’t that say more about me than it does about them?”

Heidi shook her head emphatically. “It absolutely does not. There are so many men who come off as charming and cool when you first meet them and then they show you their true selves once you’re out on a date with them. That’s exactly what happened to you. I was lucky with Dave and it was the other way around. He came across as a bit of a nerd when I first met him, but then I got to see how cool and charming he really was. Yes, fate had a hand in it, sure, but I know it had to be him.
