Chapter 11: How to Remember a Dream After Waking Up
Many people consider dreams as reflections and insights of our feelings and lives. The problem is many of us can hardly remember our dreams. With our conscious effort and some techniques, we can enable ourselves to have a better recall of our dreams and have a greater detail of it.
Keep a pad, pencil, or a pen near your bed â you can use these instruments to record your dreams immediately after you wake up. Before going to sleep, ensure that you have a clean pad to write on. You can also keep a recorder as an alternative. You might verbally recount your dream if you happen to sleep talk.
Focus on recalling your dreams â normally, a person can only remember the last part of their dream as soon as they wake up. It is better not to do anything and stay in the same position in which you awoke. Try to recall as much as you can. If possible, think of it from the beginning until the end. While you are trying to remember, focus your attention on the first thing your eyes see. That object mostly will have the recollection of your dream.
Have an account of your dream in a dream diary journal â write down as much as possible the details of your dream. Begin with a basic sketch including vital things such as the setting of your dream, the plot, the characters you saw, and the overall feeling that manifested in your dream. Any images you can remember might help. If you can recall any dialogue, you may also write it down first as it is the first thing that can be easily forgotten.
