“Denied the comforting blanket of illusory permanence and absolute truth, we have the opportunity and obligation to do something extraordinary: to see the world as it is, and to understand and appreciate that our images will keep changing, not because they are fundamentally flawed, but because we keep providing ourselves with better lenses.”

—David P. Barash41

Values: Knowing What Matters

Values define what is important to you, provide a personal code of conduct, guide your behavior, and provide a sense of fulfillment when you are in alignment with them. Clarifying the priority of your values is fundamental to making decisions that support your overall well-being. Values help you work with the positive power of limitation.

For example, if you value optimal personal health, you need to limit overindulgence. If you value treating others with respect, you may have to limit reactivity and exert more patience than you actually feel in the moment toward another person. If you value responsible stewardship of the Earth, you must consider your ecological footprint, the energy costs of things you consume, your method of transportation, and so on. To make holistic decisions, it is essential to understand your values.

Think about your past: reflect on some of the best moments of your life. What was going on and what made these experiences so outstanding? In identifying what made these moments special, you will clarify the underlying values that were being satisfied. Make a note of those values.

Think about your present: reflect on where you are in and out of balance in your life. What are you passionate about? What keeps you up at night? What motivates you? What is missing in your life right now? What do you feel deprived of? What would bring a greater sense of fulfillment to your life in the moment? Identify the values illuminated within your answers.

Now think of your future. What do you want to accomplish in your life? What is on your bucket list? What will you feel sad about or seriously regret if you don’t get to experience it in your lifetime? Identify the underlying values revealed in your answers.

Think about what upsets you, irritates you, makes you angry or judgmental, and consider which of your values you believe are being challenged or transgressed in those moments.

Think of your aspirational values—qualities you admire but may not have yet incorporated in your daily life—where you want to grow and become more proficient. Add these to your values list.
