Interestingly, Adrian himself is a writer with a keen interest in “psychology” (6), which he incidentally shares with his Edwardian namesake, the prominent psychiatrist Dr George Savage (1842–1921).12 Gabrielle goes as far as to call Adrian a “professional psychologist” (17). The reader is thus encouraged to speculate that Joanna’s story will be published and possibly contribute to a more sympathetic understanding of English feminism, or at least a more lucid approach to female suicide than was usually the case in the sensationalist press, medical or police reports, and works of fiction.
