Chapter 8

Luc

“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” I demanded as I practically dragged Arianna out the back door of the restaurant.

“Luc, let go.” She jerked her arm from my grip and glared at me as she rubbed at her biceps. “That’s unacceptable.”

I held my hands up in a surrender motion, feeling like a first-class a-hole. “Sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt you. But you can’t go back in there. Do you have any idea who that guy is?”

“Yes.” Her tone was defiant.

Shock hit me in the gut. I stared at her lovely face, the rest of the world fading away around me. My blood ran cold. “You know who he is and yet you’re out on a date with him?” I asked, keeping my tone low and very controlled. “Why? And what’s with the wig?”

She glanced back at the door, her hands clenched together at her chest. She blew out a breath, and it was then I noticed the slight shaking. “Can we get out of here?”

I nodded once and held my hand out to her, being very careful to not lose my shit. I’d been close when I’d seen them together.

She hesitated for just a moment but then tightened her fingers around mine and let me guide her out to the street. We took the first right turn, and within moments I was helping her into my red Ford F-150.

I climbed into the driver’s side, and without saying a word, I fired the engine and took off down the narrow street.

She pulled the wig off, letting her locks fall softly around her face, and stuffed it under the seat. Then she turned and stared out the window, ignoring me.

It wasn’t until I was on the expressway headed south out of New Orleans that she spoke. “How did you know where I was?”

I gritted my teeth to keep from lashing out at her. She’d been on what looked like a date with Lannister. The bastard who’d not only been terrorizing Skye but had also been giving our pack hell for the past few years just because we existed. He was a worthless piece-of-shit bigot who deserved everything he had coming to him. “I asked my cousin Wren to keep an eye on you. He’s a chef at one of the restaurants in the Garden District. The pack was concerned you’d become the next target. We never dreamed you’d deliberately go on a date with that cocksucker.”

That last bit came out harsher than I intended. But fuck. What the hell was she doing with him?

“I wasn’t dating him. God, Luc. Is that really what you think of me?” She glared at me, and when I didn’t respond, she let out a loud huff and stared straight ahead. “You didn’t have to come after me. I was doing just fine.”

The hell she was. Two weeks ago she hadn’t known shifters even existed. Now she was smack in the middle of a showdown between my pack and the Hunters. “You’re in danger, Arianna, whether you know it or not.
