Chapter Twelve

Devin pulled up to his family home. He truly missed this place, but he wished he and Nakira were back here under different circumstances. As soon as he stepped out of his vehicle, gooseflesh rose on his arms, and the hairs on the back of his neck stood up. He was being hunted.

“I know you’re there,” he yelled, closing the door and walking away from the porch. There was a small grove of trees right to his left.

Yes, that’s where it is coming from,” his wolf agreed.

Devin moved a little closer. Whoever they were, they were smart to be downwind. Devin couldn’t smell them. His wolf was just at the surface. He hadn’t changed in months, and his wolf was becoming hard to handle. Now would be a good time to let him stretch.

“This is your last warning. You need to come out.”

Whoever it was, they weren’t listening.

“Fine, have it your way,” he muttered, letting his wolf take his skin.

As soon as his reddish wolf hit the ground on all fours, he was off, cutting through the underbrush. Devin’s wolf was big but agile.

A massive predator at the top of the food chain.

The beast was hard to control on his best days. He fought like hell to stop the constant growl in his throat and rumble in his chest. Over the years, things had become more difficult. The wolf was always on alert now that it had found its mate. His wolf slid to a halt, his snout up in the air, searching for the intruder. It wasn’t anyone he’d smelled before. When he finally caught the scent, he took off again. The fucker was running.

Just ahead of him was what looked like a regular gray wolf in the wild. But Devin knew better. He was currently chasing a wolf who was as big as he was. His wolf was gaining speed. Cutting through the underbrush, dodging low-lying limbs, and jumping over fallen trees, the chase ensued. If he leapt, he would be able to grab a hind leg.

Just a few more feet, and he jumped forward, propelling his huge body into the air and latching onto one of the back legs of whoever ended up on his pack’s land. The satisfying crunch of bone would’ve made him smile, if a wolf could. The gray wolf whined but didn’t try to get away. Devin Changed back, struggling with the wolf who didn’t want to give the man back his skin.

“Kill him,” his wolf demanded.

“No. I need to find out why he’s here first.”

His wolf didn’t argue but was there, just in case he was needed again.

“Change back,” Devin ordered.

The wolf lying on the ground shuddered but didn’t shift. “I said Change back,” Devin growled, the command rattled in his chest.

The gray wolf shuddered again then howled as it gave up its wolf for human skin. Devin’s hand immediately went to the newcomer’s neck. He didn’t have time to ponder that he’d given an Alpha command, and the intruder obeyed.

“Who are you?” Devin squeezed when the man didn’t answer.
