Chapter 9

Wyatt lay unmoving on the bed, listening to the sound of Lizzie footsteps as she walked across the hardwood floors, followed by the soft ding announcing the arrival of the elevators. The swoosh of the doors told him she was really gone.

It was all over and done.

Still, her intoxicating scent surrounded him—from the sheets, the traces of her on his body, and of course, where she marked him on his neck, right at his pulse where the smell would linger on.

With a furious growl, he bounded off the bed and stalked to the bathroom. He ripped off the condom and threw it into the trash, then hopped into the shower, turning it to the hottest setting. When he grabbed his washcloth to wash her scent away, his wolf yowled in protest. That only made him scrub harder, leaving his skin red and raw.

Of course, that didn’t do much good as the moment he stepped out of his bathroom, the scent of sex and Lizzie invaded his nostrils. Fuming silently, he strode out to the living room, sat down on the couch, then reached over to his drink cart to pour himself a half glass of scotch.

Goddammit.

There was a reason he told her no the first time. It was one thing to play the part of her boyfriend, and another to teach her sex so she could be with another man. His stomach turned, and his throat felt like he’d swallowed thumbtacks at the thought that he’d practically handed Lizzie over to Maxim.

He took a sip of the scotch, then tipped the glass to guzzle it all the way down. The temporary warmth and buzz felt good, but thanks to his Lycan metabolism, it was gone in seconds. But even if he were human, he could never erase the memory of making love to Lizzie.

He’d already predicted this would happen, yet he did nothing to stop it. Leaving her back in Miami was only a temporary solution. The moment she’d walked into his den, he was a goner. And when she offered herself to him, not even the fires of hell could have made him say no a second time.

And she thought he’d been talking about her when he said he didn’t want to get emotions involved.

He attempted to sleep on the couch, but he lay there completely awake for hours, eyes open as his thoughts tortured him with the memory of Lizzie, her skin, her smell, her lips. The soft sighs and moans she made when he touched her. The way she gripped him, so hot and tight—

He shot upright, then poured himself another half glass and knocked it back. The only thing he could do now was face the truth: Lizzie did not want him. It was Maxim Silver she wanted.

Wyatt supposed he should be used to being second best by now.

The urge to throw the glass against the wall was strong, but he resisted. You’re not an animal, he reminded himself. He may share his body with one, but he was the one in control.
