The instant we left my mother’s house, I drew in a deep breath in an attempt to clear the garlic from my nasal passages. Man, that shit really stung. And lingered. It felt like it pervaded every single one of my pores and orifices. I couldn’t even imagine trying to ingest any. It’d probably rip my stomach to shreds.

“Well. That was… interesting,” Vlad commented.

I nodded but kept my gaze locked on his car—our escape vehicle. My mother had calmed down a bit after our little chat, but she’d been incredibly curious about Vlad. More like intrusive, honestly. She’d asked questions I never would have thought to ask. Like what’d it been like living in the Middle Ages. I reminded her that he’d been born slightly afterward, but that hadn’t swayed her. She’d also asked him about his parents and his life as a human. Vlad had responded graciously, but holy crap, I couldn’t take another minute in there.

“Oh, Anna!” my mother called from the kitchen window.

I grimaced. “Yes?”

“Caleb is coming over Friday night. Do drop by.”

Oh yay, another round of this. Except this time with my egotistical yet oddly stupid brother. “Sounds fun.”

My mother waved at us through the window, then pulled the curtains shut, likely to keep her nosy neighbors from peeking in on her. Neighbors who had their faces plastered against their windows, openly gawking at me and Vlad.

“Lovely,” I muttered with a curl of my lip.

Vlad tracked my gaze and nodded. Every single house surrounding us had people crowding their doorways and porches. I knew we were the most exciting thing to happen to Perish this year, but I honestly hadn’t expected this level of prying. They even had their phones out, the distinctive camera flashes giving them away. I clicked my tongue against my teeth and started toward the car. Guess they didn’t realize that 1) we couldn’t be photographed, and 2) it was the dead of night. What the hell kind of results did they expect? They’d be lucky if the photos showed the trees in their yards.

“Sorry about all this,” I said. “Guess you’re not used to this level of attention.”

Vlad clasped my hand and lifted my palm to his mouth, pressing a light kiss on my wrist. Shivers lifted the little hairs on my arms, and it took every ounce of sanity I had left to remind myself that I couldn’t jump him right here and now.

“You have no need to apologize to me,” he said. “While I’m not accustomed to meeting someone’s parents, I’ll survive.”

I chuckled. Of that, I had no doubt.

“Come.” He gestured to the passenger seat, then opened the door.

I slipped inside and belted myself in, even though I really didn’t need to. Still, we didn’t need to tempt fate a second time and land ourselves a ticket for not obeying traffic laws. We’d seen enough of the police tonight.

Once Vlad climbed in next to me, I turned down the radio and faced him. “You bought a house.”

His gaze briefly flicked to me, then back to the road.
