“Here we go. Two bedrooms, two baths. It ain’t much, but you can stay as long as you’d like.” Sunni motioned for Nyimah to enter the downtown Raleigh apartment he owned as an Airbnb.

Nyimah stepped inside and observed the space. The decor was modest but chic. Nyimah knew a woman’s touch when she saw it, and there was feminine energy bustling in the place. She made a mental note to remind herself to get updated on his affairs.

“It’s more than enough. Thank you for doing this, bro.” Nyimah sat down on the nearest couch and relieved her shoulder of the heavy purse. By the time she had made it to Raleigh to find Sunni, it had been well into the afternoon. She hadn’t gotten a second of sleep all day, and exhaustion weighed on her, making her eyelids heavy.

Sunni leaned against the wall and nodded. Seeing Nyimah brought back memories of his older brother, Asun. Other than himself, Nyimah was the only person on this earth who had meant the world to Asun. Anyone who hurt her inadvertently hurt Sunni, too, and he didn’t forgive trespasses too often. She could say the word, and anyone who opposed her would be a memory by the next day. That was how deep his loyalty to Nyimah ran. She had earned her stripes with him years ago by being a permanent fixture in his brother’s life. With Sunni, she had a soldier at her beck and call, ready to obliterate anything or anyone who threatened her.

Inhaling, Nyimah blinked away tears and finally exhaled the bullshit she had endured in the past twenty-four hours. She finished by saying, “I just want to leave it all behind me. I need a fresh start.”

“So we gon’ let that bitch-ass nigga Jabari breathe?”

Nyimah shook her head in disgust at the mention of Jabari’s name. “He’s not worth it.”

“But you are. Just say the word and I’ll deliver. Fuck the consequences. You’re my sister. The only family I got left for real. It’ll be worth it.”

The corners of Nyimah’s mouth lifted into a smile. Sunni reminded her so much of Asun. Fearless and loyal. Militant menaces. She sometimes forgot how they were raised from a young age not to fear anything or any man. Their parents had been unconventional in raising them, teaching them how to shoot a gun when they had barely touched adolescence. It had made no sense to her when Asun explained it to her when he was alive, but she understood it clearly now. Their teachings ensured that the boys would be able to protect themselves if they ever needed to.

However, those same qualities she admired in Asun were the same qualities that had ultimately contributed to his demise. She refused to encourage Sunni to go down the same path. “And that’s why I can’t allow it. I need you around to see your niece or nephew grow.” She tenderly gripped her small baby bump. “It’s not Jabari’s,” she added.

A small smile graced Sunni’s face, and his white teeth were like a light against his ebony skin.
