THE LIBRARY had always been a little intimidating. It wasn’t the room in the house Jonah would pick to curl up with a book on a sleepy afternoon. The walls were high and wood paneled and dark, filled with heavy books about treaties and pack customs—customs like the one he was about to break.
“Sit, boys.” His dad gestured to the stiff leather couch that sat in front of the huge stone fireplace. Jonah thought he might have sat on the couch once before when some distant relative had visited. Maybe. “Please. Go ahead.”
It’s just Mom and Dad. Jonah had the distinct feeling, though, that he wasn’t in there as a son but as a member of Bryce Spellman’s pack.
“So I’m sure you’ve noticed that some things have changed for me in the past months,” he began. “Especially last week.”
Bryce cleared his throat and glanced at Max. “I don’t know why you did that, son. To refuse your mate during rut isn’t healthy.”
“That’s the reason I’m in here, father. I don’t think Zoe’s my mate. At least, I don’t think she’s supposed to be.”
His mom looked at the ground. She’d been there when he called out for Max. She had to know.
“Zoe’s been your mate since childhood, son. Why do you think that’s changed?”
“Because of what happened the last time I went into rut. It was so wrong with her, Dad. I felt sick afterwards.”
Bryce wrung his hands together. “The doctor gave us a perfectly good explanation for that. You’re growing. Your body is simply tired, and the rut may have exacerbated it.”
Since when did his father use words like exacerbated? It sounded like he was parroting things he didn’t quite believe.
“It didn’t feel like that, Dad. It felt like the rut was draining me. Not just normal tired, but like I kept trying to make it satisfying and it wasn’t ever going to be, and the more I tried, the more tired I got, but it didn’t make it feel right. It never felt right. I don’t want to do it again.”
“Darling, you’re going to have to. You need children. Last time I checked, there was no other way,” Veronica said.
Jonah felt a pang. If he mated with the one he wanted, there wouldn’t be any children. Not without help outside their relationship. Still. Not Zoe. “I don’t want to have children with Zoe, Mom. I don’t want to mate with her. I want to break our bloodbond.”
His mother gasped. “We don’t do that. It’s just… not done.”
Jonah took long breaths and tried to remain calm. Crying like a teenager wasn’t the way to get through to them. “It’s not just the rut. Zoe has changed. Ever since we got to high school, she’s gotten wilder and more willful. She likes to party, she drinks a lot, and I’m pretty sure she’s gotten into drugs. She’s the one that hooked Bethany up with that senior. I just can’t see her as my mate.” He couldn’t see her in charge of a pack either, and the alpha’s mate was just as important as the alpha was.
