Chapter 7

Jade

I felt like a whore.

I knew logically it was just sex--sex with someone I’d wanted my entire life. Amazing, earth-shattering, mind-numbing, body-singeing sex. For a guy who said he’d never been with anyone, he sure knew how to bang like an adult film star with years of experience. I still found it hard to believe. I thought guys blew their load as soon as a girl touched their dick the first time. Maverick was either lying or a complete anomaly. I should have felt good. I should have been happy, but instead I felt like a harlot.

The quiet calm of the pitch-black room suffocated me. A flood of shame wrapped its arms around me, holding me so tightly that it restricted my ability to breathe. I wanted my first time to be special, maybe with roses strewn along the bed, with champagne and chocolates--that ridiculous girl dream. I should have known the reality would be messy, dirty and devilishly delightful instead.

“Penny for your thoughts?” Maverick interrupted the silence, his words a sledgehammer to my over-thinking brain. I turned my head as my eyes tried to focus on his face in the darkness. Even then, I could see the same kindness and light I’d seen when we were teenagers.

When I didn’t respond right away, Maverick shifted until he was supporting his weight on his left elbow and raised his right hand, gently gliding his fingers on my cheeks. My eyes fluttered closed at his touch, savoring the feel of his calloused hands. I could feel my fears melting slowly, but still, that sickening feeling down deep in my stomach remained. “Talk to me, beautiful.” He turned my face to him.

I opened my eyes, dreading what I may find in his. “This was a mistake,” I finally whispered. I’m not sure what I was expecting him to do, but what he did next knocked the wind out of me. Maverick bent his head down to mine, our foreheads touching.

“Don’t do that.”

“Don’t do what?” I asked as he trailed his lips from my check to my ear.

“Don’t shatter my daydream. You and I could never be a mistake.” His growl swept through me, leaving butterflies in its wake. “Besides, the best things in life come from the most unlikely places. Like the chocolate chip cookie, for example.”

“What do cookies have to do with anything?”

“The chocolate chip cookie was made because of a mistake. Some little old lady added chocolate chunks to the cookie batter, thinking that it would mix in, when it didn’t, it made something better--something perfect. The chocolate chip cookie.”

“So I’m a cookie?”

“The most delicious kind. Timeless, perfect, and once you’ve had a taste, you always crave more.” He nipped at my earlobe, causing me to jump from the sensation of his five o’clock shadow tickling the delicate skin there. “I need you to trust this. Trust me. Nine years have gone by and the memory of you has never left me. You left your mark. You’re it, baby, you’re it for me, and I’m not letting you go.
