Lena sat on the patio, looking out to the open land. Insects were singing their love songs to the world. The sound of the sliding door made Lena turn. Xavier stepped out with a blanket draped over his arm. He closed the door before he walked over to her. The look of concern was deep within his eyes, but shook it off as something else.
He bent down and draped the blanket around her shoulders. “Are you okay?”
“I’m good. I should be asking you if you’re okay.” She tugged at the blanket.
“I’m okay. This is going to be very interesting,” Xavier said before he turned to look out at his land.
“Why?”
“I dated Vivian on and off since I was around 26, 27. She always thought I would marry her; she became a little antsy around her 32nd birthday. I saw she was becoming antsy, but I pushed it to the back burner because she knew I didn’t want to get married.”
“On her 33rd birthday, she flat out asked me. In front of everybody, at her birthday party. I told her no.”
“So, she’s going to try and prove that we aren’t married?”
“Yeah, but Michael has handled that. I’m actually grateful that you brought that up because if you didn’t, we would be up shit’s creek.”
“Question?”
Xavier turned toward her and looked into her eyes.
“Why didn’t you want to marry her?”
Xavier sat in the chair beside Lena and looked forward. “Vivian wants to marry money. She Googled me before our first date and had the nerve to tell me she did. She didn’t find anything so she Googled my name with my mother’s last name. Just so happens, Thomas’s grandfather’s name was Xavier McDougal and the McDougals come from a long line of wealthy blacks. I said we had seamen, farmers, and lawyers; I should have said, they were the black men that made millions during their time. My great, great, great, great-grandfather was a pirate and made millions in the trade.”
“When she Googled me, she found out a few things here and there. Then I found out she hired a historian to find out more, and they did! I couldn’t marry someone who would go that far into finding out my net worth.”
“So why were you in the Devil’s Den?”
“We didn’t come into the money at an early age. When I turned 25, a lawyer from New Orleans contacted me. My uncle was sick so I went down there. He gave me a folder with all his paperwork for the shipping business. I found some real old papers and I didn’t understand them. I brought them to Michael and he did his thing. We found money, land, stocks, and bonds. The money was lost in space.”
“My friend’s computer skills are sick. He was able to trace everything. I divided the money between my brothers, cousins, and myself.”
“So you didn’t find out about it until you were 25? That’s crazy. What if you never found out, would you still be dipping and dapping?”
“I don’t know.
