TAKING THE CAKE

If you’ve ever helped plan a wedding or even been to a wedding in recent years, you are probably aware that there is a wedding-industrial complex out there. It consists of wedding planners, florists, decorators, dressmakers, reception halls, photographers and videographers, caterers, limo companies, musicians, deejays, jewelers, and, depending on how crazy you want to get, may even include dance instructors, jugglers, ice sculptors, and circus clowns.

According to theknot.com, the average American wedding now costs more than $29,000. In California, it’s more than $38,000, and in Manhattan, more than $86,000. Some social critics think it’s gotten out of hand. They blame celebrity and royal weddings for upping the ante. I don’t know about that, but I do know that it really isn’t about how much money you spend. It’s about how much heart you put into it.

With that thought, I’d encourage you to make your wedding your own creation, rather than trying to duplicate something pulled off by a Kardashian or a member of the British royal family. Look for ways to express yourselves and your love for each other and your families. Whether that means including family photos in the decorations or having Uncle Ernie’s band perform, Kanae and I think you will create even richer memories by adding your own special touches.

Our own example of that is a piece of cake. Well, actually, it was Kanae’s own unique take on the traditional bride and groom figures that went atop our wedding cake. My bride is very artsy-craftsy. Like many women planning weddings, she spent a lot of time on Internet websites like Etsy and Pinterest, which are chock-full of cool creations. Kanae was looking for inspiration. Since I didn’t really match the standard-issue top-of-the-cake groom figure, she decided to create one that more closely resembled me.

She purchased two wooden pegs and balls and went to work gluing them together and painting them to resemble us. As she was putting them together, Kanae decided that the balls were a bit too big to accurately portray our heads. (Well, more in her case than mine. According to my family, I’ve always had a big head!) So she ordered some in a slightly smaller size, started over, and painted them to look like us. I loved them. Everyone loved them. They were hilarious, and again, they helped make our wedding more personal and memorable. I also found it moving that in the midst of all the hullabaloo of planning and pulling off our wedding, Kanae took the time to lovingly craft something with her own hands.

Honestly, I think more photographs were taken of the bride and groom figures on our cake than were taken of the actual bride and groom. Okay, I’ll admit it—Kanae’s creation was much better looking than the guy she married, but we both have hard heads.
