CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Eddie

Anya’s brows rose high on her forehead in thinly penciled arcs. “I apologize. I did not realize you were attached.”

My hand squeezed Bri’s tight, tighter, my pulse clanging through me as he added, “She’s my girlfriend and we’re used to staying together. One less room you have to bother with. I’m sorry for the miscommunication.”

Anya didn’t hesitate. She simply nodded and indicated they would make sure my bags were brought to the room, then opened the door, gesturing for us to please enter and let them know if we needed anything. Someone would come to collect us in an hour and our bags would be in shortly.

And then Bri was pulling me into his room—our room—and shutting the door behind me. I tried to let go, but when I looked at him, my stomach dropped. I’d been about to ream him for changing the plan on the fly, for putting us in this situation, but I finally registered the stark pallor of his cheeks and how he wasn’t simply holding my hand but clutching it.

I released him and cupped his face in my hands, forcing his wild gaze to meet mine. “Breathe.” I pulled in a slow, obvious inhale, then nodded encouragingly as he did the same, joining me in exhaling.

“Good. That’s good. You’re okay.”

His jaw flexed under my palms, and I released him, not wanting to cause any more trouble for him. I had a million questions, and he’d need to explain why he hadn’t mentioned he was still having panic attacks, but right now, all that mattered was this.

“Take another breath, Bri. All the way in, hold it, and then all the way out.” Relief washed through me as he followed my directions, and color slowly seeped back into his cheeks.

After another round of breaths, his shoulders dropped and he stumbled over the plush area rug filling the space and slumped onto the bed.

With Bri safe on the bed, I took a minute to survey the space we’d be sharing.

Wow. The opulence was clear at every turn, just like it had been outside. Opulence and security, I should say. On that note, I did a simple check for video recorders, audio bugs, and the like as covertly as I could. No evidence of video surveillance—nor was that likely, especially since that kind of invasion with a superstar like Bri would be deeply problematic if somehow the press or his lawyers got ahold of it, but audio was pretty much guaranteed. I feigned appreciating the art on the wall and got up close to a painting while activating a low-level frequency interrupter of my own. It would seem like an electronic’s frequency, some powerful iPhone or computer, though neither of us had brought any personal tech that could be hacked or infiltrated by Volkov’s team. We had burner phones that had all benign information that couldn’t lead anyone to anything of use should they be hacked. The interrupter wouldn’t keep them from hearing or seeing what we did here—the presence of it might just blur things for us if we were quiet.
