“Hey, y’all!” Wren said from the front porch.

I laughed and took in the view of the house. It looked to be two stories with a porch that stretched across the front, disappearing out of sight on either side of the house. It was painted white with dark blue shutters and a front door in the same color. It looked like an old-fashioned farmhouse that had been updated over the years. This house was one I’d picture when reading a book about a small town or see on one of those romantic TV movies. Wren led us inside, and I could already tell I was going to like it here. It was homey and the smell of food filled the house and loud chatter added to the array of activity. Two little kids joined us in the foyer in front of the stairs. They stood in front of Wren.

“This is my niece, Emmy, and my nephew, Georgie,” Wren said. “Kiddos, these are my friends. That’s Sophia and that’s Jax.”

“Hi!” Emmy said. “You’re pretty and you’re cute.”

I glanced at Jax. I guessed she was calling me pretty and Jax cute. Jax grinned at her and thanked her.

“Emmy’s five and Georgie’s three. My aunt, Tiana, has twins the same age as Emmy. Micah and Kayla. But they aren’t here yet. That’s all the kids in my immediate family. Come on, let me show you to your rooms.”

Emmy and Georgie waved to us and ran off again. We followed Wren up the stairs. The long hall was lined with doors. Wren led us to two that were side by side. She opened one and told Jax that was his room and pointed me to the other. Jax set my bags on the floor of my room and went back to his own.

“There’s a Jack-and-Jill bathroom so you two can go between your rooms without coming into the hall,” Wren whispered. “I pulled some strings for you two to have that. And by strings, I mean I just decided on it.”

I laughed and wrapped my arms around her. “You’re the best, you know that?”

“Of course, I know that. Join us downstairs when you’re done. Mom is making lunch and it should be ready soon,” she said before leaving us to get settled.

I closed the door to my room and started putting my clothes away. I hated living out of a suitcase even for a few days. Besides, I didn’t want any of my clothes to wrinkle. It was going to be a busy weekend, starting with the bachelorette party tomorrow. It didn’t take me long to put the clothes away and to change into some shorts since it was hot. Jax stuck his head in and told me he was heading down. I needed to use the bathroom and told him to head down without me. He placed a kiss on my lips before leaving. Once I was done, I swept my box braids into a high ponytail and used three thick hair ties to secure it.
