“Aye, wait here. The kitchen is down there. I shouldn’t be long. Help yourself to anything you want.”

“Uh, okay.”

“Mijo, you made it! Come, she’s waiting.” Sofia came barreling down the hall, her thick frame moving with heavy steps. Her focus was on me, so it took her a minute to realize that I wasn’t alone, but the second she did, her eyes grew as wide as her smile.

“You no come alone?”

Tay smiled politely when I glanced her way, and I immediately regretted not asking her to wait in the car, but that would have been rude, even for me.

“Mission, quien, es esta?” Mission who is this?

“A friend,” I responded at the same time Tayah relayed her name. I guess she knew Spanish.

“Tayah the friend.” Sofia opened her arms expecting a hug.

“You mom be so happy to meet her.”

“Nah, she ain’t here for that. Show her where the kitchen is. I won’t be long.”

“Mission?” Sofia was disappointed. Me with a female at my mother’s house had her hopeful, and I didn’t want her to confuse some shit that wasn’t happening. There wasn’t anything between Tayah and me. Or at least not like she was thinking.

“No,” was my final word, and the look I gave Sofia sealed it. She smiled at Tayah. “Come.”

The two of them took off down the hall, and like I always did, I took the stairs two by two until I reached the top.

When I stepped into my mother’s room, she immediately smiled, bringing one to my face.

“Hey, pretty lady.” I moved to her and pressed a kiss to her forehead and cheek before taking a seat next to her on the small sofa in the sitting room. It overlooked the rose garden that I paid to have planted for her years ago. She loved the sight, smell, and feel of rose petals, so I made sure she had an entire garden full of them.

“I’ve missed you.”

“I missed you too, Ma. How you feel?”

She laughed a little. It was soft but noticeable. “Weak and lonely. I’m always alone. I miss your father, Mission.”

That shit was like a knife to my chest. She loved him so much that she basically shut down, only coming out of it a few times a year. Not even the medicine that doctors prescribed helped. They said her will to escape was stronger than the pills.

“I know. I miss him too, but you’re not alone, Ma. You have me, and you have Sofia.”

She smiled and nodded. “You’re not around much. I don’t blame you. Why would you be there for a mother that couldn’t be there for you? But I know you love me. And Sofia. She’s just loyal.”

“Nah, it’s not that. She loves you, and so do I.” I decided to ignore the rest. It wasn’t worth addressing.

“I know you love me, baby. Even when you shouldn’t. I just needed you to know that I love you too. I always will. I always have. I don’t show it because I can’t. I just—”

“It’s okay, Ma.
