Chapter Three
RJ responded with a grin that mirrored hers. âIâm glad to hear it. But donât you think you ought to give your friends a call to let them know?â
âOh. Yeah, of course. But my phoneâs dead. Can I borrow yours?â Embarrassingly enough, heâd bewitched her to the point that sheâd forgotten all about the event, Dr. Dunne, Carolyn, and even Ryan Langford, whose rear end she was supposed to be kissing right now.
He returned in a moment with a phone, a high-end model that probably cost way more than hers. His cell phone wallpaper was an abstract artwork with lots of colorful circles and blotsâKandinsky, maybe, or Miro? She always got those two confused. She gave him points for not having a picture of some scantily-clad woman thrusting her boobs at the camera, like Steve had on his phone. Tacky. Nude-woman wallpapers were the cell phone equivalent of silver naked-lady mud flaps, in her opinion. She dialed Carolynâs number.
âHey, Carolyn. Itâs me.â
âKayla! Where are you? Are you all right? Whose phone are you calling from? I almost didnât answer because the read-out just said âPrivate caller.ââ
âThe guy who gave me a ride loaned me his phone because mineâs dead. Iâm fine. He brought me to his house because of the snow emergency. Weâre about ten miles from the estate. Iâll have to get my car towed in the morning. It looks like Iâm not going to make the event,â she said, in what she hoped was a suitably convincing tone of regret.
âNo big deal. Langfordâs not here either. He just called his housekeeper and said the roads were all closed and he wasnât going to make it. I guess heâs going to find a hotel or something. Isnât that a trip? So weâre all spending the night and weâll head home once the roads are plowed. Luckily this house is so ginormous, itâs got plenty of room for everybody.â
âThatâs a relief. Dr. Dunne canât get too mad at me if the eventâs host didnât even show, right?â
âYeah, I think youâre off the hook. Heâs too busy mourning his opportunity to kiss ass to be mad at you.â
âGood!â Kayla said, watching RJ go to the fireplace to give it a couple of jabs with the poker.
âMeanwhile, this place is amazing! You wouldnât believe this house. And the foodâ¦oh. My. God. It sucks being stranded on New Yearâs Eve, but if you have to be snowbound, I canât imagine a better place to do it.â
âI can,â Kayla said. Oops. So much for her convincing show of regret about getting stuck and missing the event. Her words had practically dripped with triumph. Hot, swooning, I might-possibly-get-lucky triumph.
âHeâs that hot, huh?â A note of envy crept into Carolynâs voice.
âYes.â She watched as RJ knelt and added another log to the fire. He must have guessed she was talking about him, because he sent her a wink that made the back of her neck tingle.
âThis is perfect! Iâve been telling you for months now that you need a hot, dirty fling.
