Chapter 9

Tyresse

“What you did to that man, Young Blood – I’ve never seen that,” J said, shaking his head as we sat in the rec area playing chess. He slid his hand over the board taking one of my pawns, but his eyes were looking directly behind me.

We had just got done with lunch and were getting our usual chess game in. I didn’t understand why he said that. I looked behind me for a moment wondering why he even thought to bring that up. It had been weeks since the fight. That's when I saw him: the guy whose ass I had beat – Simon, or “The Candy Man,” was his name. They wouldn’t need to call him “The Candy Man” anymore. He was as good as dead if he came at me with that gay shit again.

“Your move,” J told me, but I was staring at the man with the bandages staring back at me – if “man” was what you could call his ass. His face was bumpy, swollen from my fists, looking at me with his one good eye.

I couldn’t help it. I stood up. I needed to know what the fuck he was staring at. I had been keeping an eye on him since he got out of the infirmary. I was sure he had revenge on his mind.

“Young Blood. Come on.” J tried to call me back to the board, but my anger was too high. I wasn’t turning away until he did.

“Young Blood. C’mon, Young Blood.”

The Candy Man got up from his seat across the room and walked in the opposite direction. That was his best bet I watched him and his flunkeys for a minute before I sat back down.

“I’m not down with that gay shit, J,” I told him.

I moved one of my pieces across the board. I didn’t know shit about chess. I was more of a checkers guy, but J was teaching me and I was willing to learn. I didn’t have shit but time now.

“You gotta learn to control your anger, Young Blood.” He glared at the board, moving his eyes back and forth.

“What you mean by that? What was I supposed to do? Let him stare me like that?” I pointed back in Simon’s bitch ass direction. I wasn’t becoming no man’s bitch, or nobody’s bitch.

“No, Young Blood, that’s not what I’m talking about,” he said, taking another one of my pieces.

“Then what you mean then? No disrespect, J, but you don’t really know me for real.” He laughed at that.

“What’s so funny?” I was getting my ass kicked in this game. We had played at least twenty times since I got there, but I was still a pretty shitty player.

“I know you good enough to know you let your anger get you in trouble sometimes.” He was probably right about that. My Momma, at least, used to say so. I should have listened to her. If I had, maybe I wouldn’t have ended up in here.

“You might be right.
