PART 7

I like to look at photographs of dead people too, Angelina. You can tell they were certain they’d never die. Not in their hearts. I feel kind of embarrassed for them, now they’ve been proved wrong. I blush for them. That forever look in their eyes. Do you see that in old photographs too? I also see their longing to be important and remembered. You know what I do? I talk to them, tell them things, ask them questions. Take them out of their frames or albums and air them, blow life into them. It feels like a duty, but one that I lovingly obey. Much better than praying. My name is Consuela, by the way. It means comfort. I would appreciate it if you will please remember me. Even though I won’t know, it makes me feel better now, more calm. I would have done the same for you. Perhaps I have already.
