“That is the dress.” Stacia, the boutique owner, ran over to Lydia and swept down the long, draping chiffon skirt. “Red is your color, and with your height you bring a regal quality to a dress that has hung lifeless on my racks for months. It’s like it was waiting for you. Just lovely.”

Lydia studied herself in the trifold mirror. A numerous red-gown kaleidoscope reflected at her as each mirror multiplied her image. She pointed the matching red shoes out in front of her, then tucked them back under the floor-length skirt. “I’ve never worn a red dress before. I tend to pick colors like blue and black and brown. Are you sure about this?”

“Oh, I’m positive. With your rich chestnut-colored hair and that glorious ruby at your neck, the color pops. Everyone will notice you.”

“That’s what I’m afraid of.” Lydia chewed on her lower lip.

Stacia paused in her fuss. She looked up at Lydia and placed her small dainty seamstress hand on Lydia’s cheek. “Your humbleness is a virtue I don’t see much of anymore. These girls these days come in here and want gowns that will not only get them noticed, but offer shock value. But you...You stand here so noble and modest. And so very beautiful. You have brought me such joy today. Thank you for coming into my store.”

Lydia smiled down at the woman. “Thank you for saying such nice things.” Another glimpse at the stranger in the mirror and Lydia raised her chin and nodded once in determination. “Okay. I can do this.”

“I know you can, but first, I think I might have a chain that will fit that ruby. The string kind of ruins the dress. And we can’t have that.” Stacia swept from her side for the jewelry counter, returning with a short gold roped chain and scissors.

“It’s beautiful, Stacia, but I only have a certain amount of money on me.”

“Don’t worry. I’ll give you a good discount.” She snipped the string before Lydia could object. Lydia caught the ruby before it fell, and within seconds, it looked right at home attached to the gold chain. “This is a good, strong clasp. You won’t lose your gem with this chain. I guarantee it.” Stacia secured it at the back of Lydia’s neck and the ruby fell right at Lydia’s clavicle bone. “Perfect. Well, almost perfect.”

Lydia groaned. “What now?”

“The hair. Why so tight? Let me loosen it for you.” Stacia pulled a chair to the mirror and Lydia sat so the short woman could take out the pins that kept her sensible bun together. Her hair swept down her back, and with deft hands, Stacia had it twisted and pinned back up just as the clock struck six.

“I’m late!” Lydia jumped from the chair. She scooped up the sweat suit and dug into the pocket for Wesley’s money. She was sure when Wesley saw her he would think she had chosen well and had been a good steward with what he had.
