Something New on the Menu
I sat at my desk more eager than usual, waiting for Mr. Jennison to come walking in. It was Wednesday, and he still hadn’t been back to work. I guess his schedule truly had picked up like he said, because we barely texted the past few days.
He had told me that he wasn’t sure when he was coming back, but it’d be some time during the week. Oh, the life of a traveling billionaire.
Each day I would eagerly hope to see him come walking through the door, with a brand new designer suit and stories from Japan, but each day I went home disappointed. But today, around lunch time, my knight in shining armor came strutting through the door.
“Hi Mr. Jennison. Did you have a good trip?” some of my co-workers asked.
I rolled my eyes. It was clear in their tone of voice that they were sucking up. Maybe that’s why they aren’t able to get put on the projects that I do. I show deference without becoming a lackey. No self made person respects a lackey.
But anyway, that’s their loss. They don’t know the conversations that Mr. Jennison and I had over the weekend, so they couldn’t understand these sorts of things. I had managed to tap into what makes this handsome business man tick, and it was clear that we had something.
When he walked up to my desk, I expected a warm welcome. But as I looked up to him, with bigger googlie eyes than usual, he seemed distant, almost cold. He rifled through a stack of mail that was on the desk, and spoke, without looking at me.
“Did I get any calls this morning?” he asked.
I tried to hide the crushing blow that it was.
“Uh, yes. I e-mailed the messages to you,” I said, disappointed.
“Thanks,” Mr. Jennison said before walking into his office and closing his door, getting ready for his morning conference calls.
I heard snickering from a few people in the office. They must have seen my face drop and gotten a kick out of it. I acted like I didn’t hear it, but felt a lump in my throat.
A million thoughts raced through my head.
Maybe he was just busy. He is a billionaire after all. Maybe I’m exaggerating how cold and distant that felt. Or, maybe those conversations over the weekend meant nothing to him. Maybe I’ve been exaggerating how meaningful the conversations were in the first place this whole time.
I found it hard to get through my day with these questions swirling through my head, mainly because I didn’t have answers for them. When you have a boyfriend, you have a reference point for when they are being unreasonable or mean, and can probably even predict when it will happen, because you know them so well.
But when you just have a school girl crush on a guy, how do you read that situation? Besides, it’s not like we were together, so he didn’t really owe me anything in the first place.
