“That fucking bitch broke my wrist! She should not be able to do that.” Beth wailed. She turned on Ellery. “And you, asshole, were way too slow. You were supposed to be ready as soon as I got close, not be ten feet away ogling her boobs.”

“I couldn’t get closer, there was these little kids. They ran right in front of me. I swear one of them was throwing olives, and where in the fuck did that cat come from?” Ellery complained as they walked the short distance to the car. “Besides I told you this was a bad idea. We’ve had plenty of opportunities to take her, but you wanted to do a big show of it. Too many people about, and too many fucking mages.”

“That was part of the point, dumbass, to show those abominations that they can’t hide from us. At least it wasn’t a complete loss.” Beth climbed into the sedan car at the rendezvous point. They had parked it a half mile from the house, easily within range of Ellery’s transporting abilities.

“But they will now know who we are. They’ll expect us or move her to a place even harder to get to.” Ellery argued. “You’ve already started suffering losses now that she has powerful protectors.”

“We don’t pay you to think.” Beth snapped. “We pay you to get or move stuff for us, that’s your job, your only job. You got one chance to make a mistake. You made it when she tricked you into helping her escape. Lucky for you tonight wasn’t a total loss, or else I’d be driving back alone.”

Ellery was silent all the way to the small airstrip where a private plane was waiting. There he watched Beth board the plane. Getting back into his car, he began the drive to his next destination. Ellery hated Beth Comstock and her husband Jack, but they paid well and had ensured his loyalty by showing just how easy it was to kill him if he didn’t comply. They claimed they wanted to end the world of people like him and believed they could do it by studying powerful magic users like Allison Thompson to achieve their agenda.

Still the work was lucrative and the Comstocks even sent referrals his way. Ellery really didn’t give a shit about what they were doing, because he didn’t believe in their success. They were ruthless, smart and rich. His team had never been busier. He just hadn’t liked all the showmanship of the Boston job or this one. He much preferred quick ins and outs with no one the wiser.

Boston had been Jack’s suggestion including the addition of the woman who shielded the team that went into the bank and the second transportation mage. She put the team in place after the detonation, able to move several people at a time. The downside is that it took her hours to get reserves back up to do it again.

Ellery didn’t know why it was set up that way, but the payday had been too lucrative.
