Chapter 7

Happy Birthday Evelyn

“Yo,” Evelyn answered the ringing phone.

Elise yelled into the phone, “Bitch I know you still not on the Southside?”

“I’m coming,” she lied. Evelyn still had two bags of money to count before she could leave.

“E, it’s your birthday, you can’t be late to your own dinner,” Gabby said in the background.

“Why we couldn’t just go to the strip club?” she asked, for the fortieth time this week.

“Because that’s all we do,” Elise told her sister.

Evelyn had to get back to working; she rushed them off the phone. “I will see y’all at eight and I’m driving my own car, cus when I’m ready to go I’m ready to go,” she said.

“Don’t forget the makeup artist will be at your house at six,” Gabby reminded her.

Evelyn stopped putting money into the feeder. “My house? You gave someone my address?” she asked, mad as hell.

“She’s not hood and she doesn’t care about where you stay,” Gabby said.

“You don’t know who the fuck she know! I got to go, bye.” Evelyn hung up in her face.

Knock. Knock.

Evelyn grabbed her gun. She was not expecting any visitors.

She peeped through the blinds of the stash house and saw Paper.

She opened the door but not enough for him to come in.

“Damn, it’s like that?” he asked.

Evelyn wasn’t in the mood for games at all. “How can I help you?”

“E, let me in,” he told her.

She couldn’t allow Paper’s lying ass to slither his way back into her life; he didn’t deserve her at all. “Busy,” she said, closing the door back.

Paper yelled, “I’ma shoot this damn door down.”

Evelyn flung it open. “Really, that’s what the fuck you gone do?” she asked, with attitude.

“Happy Birthday,” he said closing the front door.

“I’m counting money, you know you can’t be here,” she told him.

“Not fazed at all ma,” Paper told her grabbing the knot in his pocket.

“It’s been months, you just now finding your way to me?” she asked out of curiosity.

“You crossed my mind, it’s your birthday,” he reminded her.

“Okay and?”

Evelyn had finally erased all thoughts of Paper and it felt good to replace the pieces of her puzzle together. She hadn’t dated since him or even thought of another nigga. In her eyes, there weren’t any niggas like Paper so she didn’t even believe in wasting her time.

“Chill out,” he told her.

“I’m not doing this with you,” she said, never dropping her still face.

“I miss you,” Paper told her and that was the God’s truth. Not a day went by that he didn’t think about her but he respected Evelyn not to come at her on some bullshit. In addition, he witnessed her kill a bitch for sitting on his lap. Paper didn’t fear many but that gruesome night at the club, he realized that Evelyn actually gave a fuck about him.

“And again, why now?” she asked.

“Had to get some things situated.”

“You had another baby like it was nothing,” she told him. Paper looked surprised that she knew that.

Atlanta was smaller than most people assumed.
