Chapter 10

Zyon

I was still suspicious of Cane, but I hadn’t mentioned anything about it to anybody. It was just best that I pretended that things were the same as always. Deniro’s funeral was going to be the Tuesday after my murder date with Caruso. It was just me and Mel sitting in his blue box Chevy Caprice in the drive through of a Wendy’s near the Bluff.

That was our territory now and the takeover had been smooth. Those G Mob niggas were either dead, or running scared. We were keeping our eyes peeled on what was going on near our new trap. Pushing heroin was not up my alley, but with the help of the already steady clientele, everything was kosher in our new hood. It wasn’t like the dope fiends gave a damn who served them.

As we waited for our food, I decided to ask him how he felt about how Cane had been acting the day that Deniro was killed.

“Yo’ man, you think Cane was actin’ a lil’ strange before Niro was shot?” I asked with my focus on his facial expression.

He shrugged his shoulders, but the look on his face didn’t change. “He’s been actin’ strange since those niggas bucked at him to me. Honestly man, that nigga Cane’s always been a fuckin’ character. He’s cocky and he can be a live wire, but he’s a’ight wit’ me.”

I nodded. “I’on know Mel. I ain’t sayin’ he did nothing, but he was actin’ like he wanted to come at me and then all of sudden that nigga Niro’s dead. Now he’s actin’ all cool again, like the confrontation between us never happened.”

Mel sighed and reached over to grab our bags from the chick at the window. When we pulled off he finally spoke.

“You can’t put shit past niggas these days man. Loyalty just don’t come like that from what I seen goin’ on lately. We’ll just have to keep our eyes on that nigga. I got yo’ back man. You know that.” He passed me my bag of food, but my appetite was gone.

I nodded. “Yeah man.” Truthfully, I hardly trusted anybody anymore.

My phone rang and it was Cane’s number on the screen. “Speak of the devil.” I sighed before I answered.

“What’s good my nigga?” He asked sounding all hyped about something.

“Sup Cane? What’s goin’ on man?”

“I just got word that that bitch Kia was in a bad car accident today. It wasn’t even far from her crib. She tried to stop at a light but couldn’t and ran into a few cars. She at Grady and I heard that it don’t look too good. I think somebody died and shit too.”

“You told Bey yet?”

“Nah, she and Mackie went to the mall and she ain’t answerin’ her phone.”

“A’ight man.” I ended the call. “Take me to get my car Mel.”

“What happened man?” Mel asked.

I shook my head and decided not to mention anything about Kia. “Nothin’, just gotta go holla at my pops real quick. We’ll get up later on.
