Chapter 16
Leah was just turning over, about to fall asleep, when the sound of her doorbell woke her up. At first she thought she was hearing things, so she lay still and waited for it to ring again. When it did, she looked at the clock radio on her nightstand: It was 2:00 in the morning. Who in the hell could that be at this hour? Instinctively, she got up and reached for her gun—a bit paranoid maybe, but her police work had taught her that one could never be too careful. She slid her feet into her slippers and went to the door. “Who is it?” she asked in a strong voice.
“Noah.”
Her eyes flew wide, and her mouth popped open. Oh shit! What the hell is he doing here at this hour of the night? Leah put her gun down and hastily snatched the scarf off her head. Oh shit! She looked down at herself in her short white cotton nightgown and ran back to her bedroom for her robe.
Noah was ringing the bell again by the time she got back.
“I’m coming!” she called out, fluffing her hair with her fingers. She blew her breath into her hand. All right. I’m okay. Leah opened the door.
Noah was standing with his shoulder against the frame, finger extended, about to ring the bell again. He looked down at her with his magnificent gray eyes and smiled his sexy smirk at her. “Sorry if I woke you up.”
Leah tightened the belt on her robe. Flustered by him, she nervously ran her fingers through her hair. “It’s okay. Are you all right?”
He shrugged, looking at her steadily. “I’ll live,” he said simply.
Leah didn’t want to just stand there staring at him like a love-struck teenager. She reached for something to say. “It’s 2:00 in the morning, Noah.”
He looked a bit remorseful. “I know. I’m sorry.”
His eyes danced over her body, and she felt goose pimples rise up all over her. Noah ringing her doorbell at this hour was dangerous. Noah is dangerous. He was like that apple in the Garden of Eden: impossibly beautiful, monumentally tempting, and most likely, incredibly delicious and satisfying. But just like that apple, she was sure taking a bite out of Noah probably came at one hell of a cost. The price of falling in love with him would no doubt be like selling a small piece of her soul. She knew men like that were capable of driving women crazy, forcing them to act irrationally just to keep them in their lives. Women had always made fools of themselves over gorgeous, sexy men, and they always would. Noah was all those things, and she also knew he was a very bad boy. She frowned. She knew she should absolutely, unequivocally, just fucking know better, but Noah was extremely appealing, and she wanted him like someone dying of thirst wants a cold drink of water. Leah smiled, and he smiled back. He was waiting her out, letting her make up her mind, letting her choose.
