Chapter Thirteen

Elizabeth did as she was told.

She didn’t have any interaction with Jenna. Elizabeth let Jenna run her own course, and while she did feel like it was wrong in a sense, she also knew that bothering Jenna with anything at the moment was just asking for a death wish. She was going through her own shit, and while she didn’t agree with the way she did it, there was no sense in trying to reason with her.

Jenna had her own demons, and Elizabeth would let her sort them out.

Course, that didn’t mean that she was okay with how ragged the woman was looking. Elizabeth would, every single day, make her food, and she would then see Jenna come home. The woman looked exhausted, with a face that grew paler each day, huge bags under her eyes, and sallow cheeks. She looked frail n a sense, like she could break at any moment, but she also did look smaller as well, like she wasn’t eating.

Elizabeth wanted to ask if she got the food that she put out for her. Elizabeth made sure to have enough, for Jenna, even though Jenna seemed insistent upon not letting her in her life. Elizabeth wanted to know, and the next day, when she checked the trash, the food was there.

There was very little eaten, if at all. Elizabeth’s fists were clenched, anger bubbling in her.

“For fucks sake!”

Elizabeth held her hand over her mouth, hoping that Clara didn’t hear her. She didn’t want to explain to Clara why she was angry, but the bubbling anger in her body was starting to show through.

Jenna refused to eat! The fact that Jenna was that stubborn, the fact that she degenerated so much, hurt Elizabeth. She did all of it for Jenna. She felt a feeling of pride when she saw her happy, and the fact that Jenna was so adamant upon refusing help, definitely didn’t work out in her favor.

That’s when Elizabeth decided. She wouldn’t put her worries into Jenna. Instead, she needed to focus on Clara, and make sure that Clara was okay. Elizabeth instead spent her time working with Clara on schoolwork, spending time with her. Even though her mother was a cold-hearted bitch, and a stubborn idiot, Clara was a great girl, and Elizabeth felt like in a sense she was raising her, but on Jenna’s dime.

One night, after they finished working on a piece of homework, Clara turned to Elizabeth.

“Elizabeth, do you still like Mommy?”

That was a question she didn’t know how to answer.

“I don’t know Clara. I think she’s making a lot of mistakes, but it’s not my place to speak on it,” she said.

“I know. I worry about Mommy. She looks tired. Like she doesn’t sleep. Her eyes look really droopy,” Clara pointed out.

Clara was much more intuitive than most kids, and even she could tell Elizabeth was a washed-out mess.

“I feel the same way Clara. But, your mother isn’t listening to me. I talked with her and we spoke like adults but…she’s not responding,” Elizabeth said.
