I was a little early because I had saved myself time to walk slowly down my driveway, and back up his driveway, without falling. But since I opted for my flats instead of heels, I made better time.

Gabriel must have seen me approaching, because he met me out front and took my hand to help me up the old stairs.

“Hey,” he breathed, almost sounding relieved I had shown up.

“Hi,” I blushed.

He motioned for me to enter his home, and once again I took in how comfortable it all felt. I took a seat on his couch and sunk in, feeling relaxed–more than I was in my own cabin. There was just something about being in someone’s full time home rather than a space furnished for vacations and short getaways.

“How was your day?” He asked, settling in beside me.

“Good, actually. I got a ton of work done.”

“Not so much you are going to leave, I hope.”

I blushed once again and shook my head. “I’ll be sure to slow down.”

“You feeling better?” He took a small strand of my hair and pushed it back, away from my eyes.

“Yes. Much. Thank you so much for staying. I can’t believe I did that, and you put up with me.”

“I was glad you weren't alone. I promise.”

We sat there lazily smiling, not talking but just playing the ultimate staring competition. It was like something was happening between us and neither wanted to break the spell with words. But if we kept on too much longer, it was going to get awkward again.

I was going to get awkward.

“What’s for dinner?” I finally asked.

“Steak and potatoes,” he fended off the trance we had been in, and moved back toward the kitchen.

“I love it!”

Somehow, that was all we needed to fall into a normal conversation. It didn't involve murderers, alligators, or mosquitoes. Instead, I learned that Gabriel was once a city boy, working for an ad company, and being the suit and tie guy I usually went for. He wasn’t a widower, like I had guessed, just a guy who needed to get away from the grind to find himself again.

In a way, we had that in common, because even though I wasn’t ready to put roots down in Sycamore Mountain, I had already learned the value of detaching and just living. It was something I talked to Gabriel about, and we laughed over dinner at how much our absence affected those around us.

I loved Johnny but he stressed me out. He tried to make sure I was employed, but it came at the expense of not doing what I really wanted to do. In his own way, he was being a best friend, but I wondered what he would do as my boss if I ever got brave enough to follow my own dreams?

By the end of the night with Gabriel, I had transformed into someone else. Not completely, but I felt like I had the world at my fingertips. That I could make choices like he did, to put myself first and find who I was really meant to be.
