This attitude of sacrifice can make all the difference in a marriage. Put two people with different personalities, priorities, and gifts in the same household, and someone is going to have to sacrifice for the other at some point.

When Bruce Kuhn, a former Broadway actor, met Hetty, he knew he’d found the woman of his dreams. The only problem was that Bruce’s work took him all over the United States. Hetty, an artist, lived in the Netherlands. Her client base was across the ocean. So Bruce, at midlife, and without knowing a word of Dutch, moved to the Netherlands, where Hetty could continue her work. After pulling back on his demanding schedule, he now makes a transatlantic commute when he can and helps raise their two children.

He says, “My artistic ambitions were the whole center of my universe. [But] I came to the point of saying, I will purposely put you in front of myself, and she did the same…. She honors and respects my work enough to put her work on the line, and she’s as committed to her artistic life as I am.”

Bruce acknowledges that adjusting his career and moving a world away have not been easy, but the joy he discovered in the sacrifice is obvious.

Humility in marriage might mean sacrificing a job, your first choice of how to spend the weekend, or simply the need to win an argument. It can be tempting to push a spouse to agree with you about something as minor as what year you went to the Grand Canyon. Humility sometimes calls you to sacrifice your own need to be right for the sake of a relationship.
