Chapter Seven: Emma
Once I had found Sophia and we were on our way home, we encountered Margaret and Harriet who seemed to be enjoying themselves. Margaret giggled and ran around Harriet waving a pink ribbon in her hands. Sophia frowned when she saw the scene, and I silently agreed that it was inappropriate for them to make themselves noted for being silly and immature.
“Do you like my new ribbon?” Margaret asked us, and then she frowned at Sophia. “Of course you do not, for you would never like anything that makes you look beautiful.” She placed it before her neck. “How do I look, Emma? Does it not make me look much prettier?” It did not look special or different; she had at least two other ribbons that looked almost the same. It made no sense that she had bought it.
“You already have a similar one,” I said.
“Yes,” she said, unworried. “But I did not find any other ribbons that I liked, so I bought this one. The ones I have suit me, so this one will suit me too.”
“Nobody forced you to buy anything,” I said.
She rolled her eyes. “Then the trip to Westford would have been useless. I preferred to make use of the day instead of wasting it.”
And she preferred to waste her money. Sophia glanced at me with her disapproving stare, but she did not dare to say anything to Margaret.
Harriet rolled her eyes too. “No men will ever look at you... at either of you if you do not take care of your appearance.”
“Vanity is a terrible sin,” said Sophia. “You should know better than to buy ribbons without need. Buying a ribbon to look better is bad enough, but buying a ribbon for the sake of it is even worse.” She moved her face slightly from side to side in affectation. She could be rational and very nice, but whenever she had some preaching to do, she thought herself in possession of the absolute truth. No wonder that the twins sometimes made fun of her. I had to try to convince her to judge others less outwardly, or at least less often.
Margaret giggled at Sophia’s comment, and Harriet joined her.
“When do you plan to become a nun, Sophia?” asked Margaret. “You are the most uninteresting person on Earth.”
“Stop picking on her,” I said. “She has her beliefs just as you have.”
“Ugh. Another nun.”
The twins hastened their pace and left us behind. I approached Sophia, who was clearly in discomfort. “You do not need to listen to them,” I said. “They are immature and will find it harder to find a proper husband.”
“I do not need their acceptance to know, deep inside my heart, that I am following my conscience.” She continued walking and left me with my words in my mouth. She could have been less open about her beliefs, because the twins always took her sentencing remarks as arrogance, even though she only tried to act according to the scriptures. Sophia had a very pure heart, but it did not always show because it hid under a veil of didacticism.
