TRISTAN

I was a nervous wreck and hadn’t been able to sleep all night thinking about today.

“Girl, would you chill?” Taraj teased as we walked up a long sidewalk leading to the grand Crowne estate. “I swear, the Crownes will love you.”

“Are you just saying that because you’re trying to be an encouraging best friend? Or do you actually think they will like me? I want them to think I’m good enough for Creed.”

Taraj shook her head. “They will, Tris. They will probably tease him about not being good enough for you.”

“He is though,” I defended, a smile curling at my lips. “He may be a little rough around the edges, but he has layers. He’s real. He didn’t let the hardships he faced in life change his heart.”

Laughing, Taraj looped her arm across my shoulder with ease since we were practically the same height. “Had I known you would be this anxious about meeting everyone, I would have told Creed that maybe their annual Juneteenth celebration wasn’t the best event to invite you to.”

I’d even thrown my hair up into a bun so I could wear my large red, black, and green satin bow, topping off my look with matching eyeshadow and a tinted red lip gloss.

“Uhh.” Taraj looked me up and down. “You look great, but maybe you tried a little too hard with this outfit.”

“Well, I asked you what I should wear, and you said a Black pride outfit,” I told her. “As bad as it sounds, I never knew a family who celebrates Juneteenth.”

“Creed’s parents are big on knowing your history, and I hardly knew anything about my heritage until I met the Crownes. Since they adopted all their kids and accepted me as an honorary family member, they wanted to make sure we knew where we all came from before we settled on where we were going and what we wanted to achieve out of life.”

“I love that.” In fact, it was rare that I learned anything about Duchess and Stan Crowne that I didn’t like. Granted, some of their tactics in how they handled the many facades
