Chapter Seven

Sheeba—The Confrontation

The library was unusually full for a Saturday night. People seemed to be socializing more than studying. It was during these times that I understood why the library was also called Club Woody. I bypassed the tables and study rooms in the front of the library—knowing by trial and error that I wouldn’t get anything accomplished because of the traffic and noise. I walked to my usually nook in the back of the library—confident that I would be able to choose any spot in the library I wanted after a few hours. There weren’t many people who would be spending their Saturday night in the library with midterms a few months out.

I got comfortable at a desk in the midst of five other desks that were separated by partitions. I took off my shoes and placed my feet in the seat across from me. I cracked opened the Wuthering Heights—eager to pick up where I had left off.

“Sheeba Marguerite Parker. Sheeba Marguerite Parker. Please report to the reference desk. Sheeba Marguerite Parker please report to the reference desk.” The announcement can across the intercom loudly, pulling me from the novel.

I closed the book, sat up in my seat, and slid my feet back in my shoes. Was the voice referring to me? Surely, there had to be another Sheeba Marguerite Parker, I thought with my heart racing. No, come on Sheeba. There’s another person in the library with your entire name? I questioned myself as my logical reasoning started to kick in. But if the voice was referring to me, what did they want. Was I in trouble? Did I do something wrong that I wasn’t aware of? I didn’t know. However, I did know that if I was going to find out the answer to any of those questions I had to do what the voice said: report to the reference desk.

I stood up and walked toward the front of the library—leaving my belongings on the desk—hoping no one would bother them. I wasn’t too worried since the only thing I had in my bag were books that I’m sure no one wanted. As I approached the reference desk, I scoured the immediate area for a familiar face, but I didn’t see anyone I recognized.

“Hello,” I said, to the woman sitting behind the reference desk. “My name is Sheeba Marguerite Parker. Someone called me over the intercom.”

“Oh wow. You look a lot older than seven.”

“Yeah, I’m eighteen.”

The woman looked past me as if she was searching for someone. “I’m sorry,” she said, returning her eyes to me. “A young man said that you or someone was his seven year old missing sister.

“Yeah, I don’t think it’s me. I don’t have any brothers.”

“This is very bizarre. I’m sorry for disturbing you.”

“It’s no problem.” I smiled and took a few steps away from the counter before returning. “I’m sorry for bothering you again. But was the guy about 6’0 and named Benjamin.”

The woman shook her head. “No, this was a very tall man, well over 6’0, and he didn’t give a name.
