Chapter Fourteen

When we find, ourselves stuck in traffic, I remember why I thought a car in LA would be totally useless. The car to our left has been laying on the horn for a good five minutes, as if it will move the traffic along.

I have the slightest urge to roll the window down and tell him to shove it where the sun doesn’t shine. Oliver, however, is as serene as ever. He is smiling and listening to the soundtrack of Hamilton. I am trying my best to talk over the loud horn beside us.

“Therefore, I never bothered to get a car,” I tell him and he laughs. He shakes his head but stares ahead.

“You walk everywhere?” He asks in amusement, and I nod. “To work?” he’s shaking his head now. “No wonder you agreed to go on a date. Free car ride.” I giggle at his words.

“No, Sharon has a car too.” I remind him.

“Oh, you use me so.” He throws a hand to his chest.

“I would never.” I giggle.

“Have you ever considered acting?” he asks me, and I frown a little thrown by the question.

“I guess if it would get me to fame faster.” I say and it is his turn to frown.

“I think I have figured out your first mistake.” He says after a few moments. The horn beside us finally stopping. I sigh in relief.

“Mistake?” I ask.

“Yeah. You think you’ll be famous by any means. You have to find one means and stick with it.”

“Hmm.” I think about it thoughtfully. “I don’t know if I would be good at acting.” I say honestly.

“I think you would. If it were a musical maybe. That way you would have singing to back you up. You wouldn’t have to necessarily talk. You would be singing through your emotions.”

I nod but he continues, “Take Hamilton for example. They’re all singing, the entire play. They don’t say words. They sing them. You convey so much emotion when you sing your songs, I feel like the emotion would be conveyed.” He looks over at me, and stares. “Does that make sense?”

I nod, “Yeah, it really does.” I whisper, deep in thought,

“I think I could see you on a stage performing no matter where that may be.”

I smile up at him. “Do you really think so?”

He nods, “You’re too talented to be hidden away.” He reaches for my hand, and I gladly take it. He begins rubbing his thumb against my hand.

“So are you.” I say and he shakes his head.

“My happiness is more important than fame to me.” he faces the road once more, as the cars move a bit.

“What do you mean by that?” I ask, a bit taken aback.

“I mean that I love my bar. I love that I can help people find their voice. It’s my passion. I love my crowd. I love my sound. They would change me too much.” I watch him, and he watches me from the corner of his eye.

“Do you think they would change me?” I ask finally.
