The grand opening of the Manhattan on July 1, 1892, was designed to attract people not only from the community but from all over the state. Free steamship rides on the freshly christened Manhattan were offered in an attempt to draw crowds from the Arnolds Park railroad station. Speakers included Iowa Supreme Court judge Josiah Given, a local celebrity—he built the first “vacation cottage” in Okoboji in 1886. The unusual angle of this photograph taken in the Manhattan’s early days gives a clue to what D.B. Lyon thought would appeal to vacationers. Wide verandas extended all around the pavilion on two levels to catch lake breezes. The hotel being built over the sandbar meant that guests were only steps away from West Okoboji’s clear waters.
