CHAPTER 15

He stops the moment they’re standing on the sidewalk. He gathers Maeve in his arms and holds her tight against him. “I’ll keep you safe,” he promises her.

Shaking her head, she pushes at him. Reluctantly he lets her put a little space between them. “It’s not your job to stand between me and danger,” she tells him. Her expression is gentle but firm. “You can stand with me to face whatever is coming, but—”

“Goddess Mother, no.” His harsh voice stops her. “Don’t you understand? If that image is correct. If Tavi sees Jonas, then he must be coming here. He’ll kill everyone. He’ll want to kill you.”

“Me? Specifically?” she shakes her head in disbelief. “Why would he want to target me?”

“You’re Ghost Eyed, a Keeper, and your Clan Leader is a human! How can you be this naïve after everything that’s happened to you?” he nearly shouts out.

His angry outburst makes her draw back, surprise and concern on her face. “Whoa, there’s a lot to unpack there.”

“You guys okay?” Steph calls from the open door of the house. Cyrus wants to growl at her, but Maeve talks before he does anything rude.

“Is there any way we can get back to New Clan on our own?” Maeve asks the Clan Leader. “I think Cyrus and I need to find a quiet place to talk.”

“Yeah, I can tell,” Steph says with a nod. She fishes around in her pocket and then tosses something at him. He catches it reflexively, then opens his hand to find that she tossed a car key fob at him. “You guys can take the SUV home. Troy is on his way over to drop off some stuff for Tavi, so we’ll catch a ride back with him.”

“Thanks, Steph” Maeve calls out. Then she taps him on the chest with her open palm. “You do know how to drive, right?”

For some reason that makes him smile. “Yes, I know how to drive.”

“Great, because last time I tried driving it didn’t go so well.” Her grin tells him she’s teasing. “Let’s go find a coffee shop or something. I need caffeine, and you need to explain some things.”

In short order he gets her loaded in the SUV, finds a quaint coffee shop that doesn’t smell of shifter, and settles the two of them down with drinks at a corner table. She takes a sip of the cold, sugary concoction that she had him order, then a satisfied expression covers her face. “Oh yeah, that’s the ticket.”

“Do you want anything else? There are muffins, scones, and other things on display. I could describe them all to you. “

“Nope, no need to give me details on some baked goods. This is perfect. Now, no more stalling. It’s time to fess up about the Conclave.”

He’s kept this secret for so long, he’s not sure he can dive right in. It feels like Jonas is going to appear out of thin air and Challenge Cyrus to a fight the moment he tries to talk.
