A couple of hours later, Ethan woke with a start. He had fallen asleep on the couch. Becca had fallen asleep on the soft, cushioned armrest of his couch, and the top half of her body leaned on his shoulder, while from the waist down, her legs dangled over the armrest.

He looked at bright green time display on the DVD player. It was almost one thirty in the morning. He heard voices from the other side of the room.

“You still playing, Billy?” he shouted across. Zoe wasn’t there. It was just Billy and a couple of other guys.

“Nah. We’re finished. Come on, guys—time to call it a wrap.”

Ethan didn’t move from where he sat. He didn’t know what to do with Becca to begin with. He watched Billy walk the other two friends to the door.

Billy walked back and stood in front of Ethan. “You checked out, man.” He pointed at Becca. “Looks like she’s staying here tonight.”

“Not with me she isn’t.”

“It’s nearly two in the morning, man. You going to walk her home?”

“Me?” Ethan rubbed his eyes. “I’m beat. I need to sleep. I’ve got a heavy day in the workshop tomorrow. You better take care of her, Billy. She’s Zoe’s friend.” He tried to move his shoulder but the slight movement he made to get away made Becca flop against him even more.

“Help me out here, Billy. You shoulda woken me up,” pleaded Ethan, trying to move Becca back the other way.

Billy yawned loudly and stretched. “What’s happening tomorrow?” he asked.

“The sculpture’s almost done. Just gotta tweak it a little.”

“About time, too. You’ve been working on it for a couple of months, haven’t you?” he asked.

“Been working on it too long. Once it’s delivered to the gallery, I can get payment. That’ll help for sure. Can you help me move it?” Ethan held Becca at bay. Her legs were threatening to follow the rest of her body. One move and she would land in Ethan’s lap. It was a wonder she hadn’t already.

“Sure. But how’re you going to do that?”

“I’m going to have to hire a U-Haul for a few hours and hopefully get it moved on Monday. Will you be around?”

“I can fit you in, buddy,” said Billy. “Good that you’ll have some money coming in at last.”

“Yeah, and I’ll pay you what I owe you as soon as I get it. Sorry it’s taken so long.”

“Don’t worry about it. I’m just happy to see you getting back on your feet again. I know it’s been a really tough couple of months.” Billy moved towards the door. “I’m beat. I’ll catch you tomorrow,” he said, about to leave the room.

“Hey!” said Ethan, widening his blue eyes. “Don’t leave me with her.” His voice was desperate.

“What do you want me to do?” asked Billy, unsure what they could do with Becca now that it was so late.

“Do her parents even know she’s here?” whispered Ethan, eyeing the door. He wondered whether he could make it there before Billy did and therefore absolve himself of the responsibility of their houseguest.
