With the resort winding down for the day and preparing for the night, the walkways between villas are quiet. I pass a villa with a family in it, everyone eating appetizers in the kitchen, showers running, and music playing in the back. Before I left, Skylar had ordered dinner in and also found out where Cressida is staying by slipping Raul fifty credits — Villa 375.

Villa 375 is just up and around the corner. I stick to the shadows, well aware that I’m naked, and I should be careful of where I step. Not only do I not have anything to protect my feet, but I should also stay clear of prickly bushes or anything that will be a problem for my bare skin.

Have I mentioned I don’t enjoy being naked? I recently adopted a clothes-at-all-times approach to post-sex and sleeping after what happened with the prescient berries, but nude is not a state I stay in for long as it is. I like to be protected. This feels wrong in so many ways.

I pass by another villa, and a dog jumps against the backyard fence and barks at me.

“Hey, Charlie! Quiet down!” his owner calls out.

Hmmm, Charlie can see me… or maybe smell me? Gus could still smell me when I was in the room. Charlie barks more as I slink away, then he gives up and quiets down.

I take a deep breath and look at my hands as I approach Villa 375. I’m still invisible as far as I can tell, so I circle around to the back of the house where I hear voices.

“Oh my God, give it a rest, Cress. You’ve been complaining for an hour straight.”

Whoever is talking is exasperated to no end.

“I’ll bitch as much as I want to,” Cressida responds, a haughty tone to her voice. “This is my network, my vacation, with my money, and I’ll do whatever the fuck I please.”

I hear a weary sigh from someone. “Okay. I’ve had it for today. I’m going for a walk.”

“Don’t you walk away from me!”

If this was the way she spoke to Jinzo, no wonder he left.

“I will walk wherever I damned well please.” His baritone voice echoes through the house. “Don’t wait up.”

The front door slams, so I tiptoe around to the side of the villa and see a man leaving, his deep copper skin reflecting the last rays of the sunset. I can’t remember his name, but he’s one of Cressida’s top consorts, acquired a year or two before Jinzo.

Maybe I should let this be. Maybe I shouldn’t fight this with Cressida. Will it make me a better or worse person to let her get away with her shit?

I’m not certain.

“Well?” Cressida’s voice rises again, so I return to the rear of the house. “Who else is going to leave now?”

Silence.

It only takes a moment to realize I’m being silly by not looking in the window. I have invisibility. I could walk through their house right in front of them, and they wouldn’t see me.
