Tarzana

This residential community has grown up around the ranch once owned by Edgar Rice Burroughs, creator of Tarzan. Burroughs moved to the area in 1919 to be close to the studios that were filming his Tarzan movies. In the San Fernando Valley, he bought the 540-acre estate of the late Gen. Harrison Gray Otis, founder of The Los Angeles Times, and renamed it Tarzana. Burroughs intended to establish a working ranch on the property, which he stocked with Angora goats, Berkshire hogs and riding horses, but by the mid-1920s, he opted to divide the estate and create a new town. The house and 120 acres of the ranch became El Caballero Country Club. During World War II, Burroughs, then 66, became the oldest war correspondent to cover the South Pacific theatre of action.
