Lorcan was stunned to see Devon at the grocery store, but he was also happy. His presence meant that Devon felt comfortable enough to leave Justin’s house, and that was a good thing.

A very good thing.

The problem was that Devon looked like a deer caught in the headlights. He clearly hadn’t expected to meet Lorcan at the grocery store, but then, neither had Lorcan. The fact that Lorcan’s mom was there further complicated things, and Lorcan realized he probably shouldn’t have called out to Devon when he’d seen him. He’d been so surprised he hadn’t thought about it, and now, there they were, staring at each other, with Justin and Lorcan’s mom hanging around them looking awkward.

Lorcan wondered what he should do. He didn’t want to lie to his mom about who Devon was, but he also didn’t want to out Devon as his mate if that wasn’t what Devon wanted. He didn’t see any other option, though. His mom had heard him call Devon by name, and she knew he was his mate.

Lorcan cleared his throat. “I’m happy to see you,” he told Devon.

Devon was looking anywhere but at him, but he nodded. “I’m happy to see you, too.”

“So this is my mother,” Lorcan said.

Devon looked at her and smiled, but it was tight and nervous. “It’s a pleasure to meet you.”

“It’s a pleasure to meet you too, Devon.” Lorcan’s mother looked at him. “Lorcan has told me about you.”

Devon blinked. “He has?”

“Yes. In fact, he told his father and me about you this morning.”

Lorcan’s mom was speaking gently, and he knew it was because he’d warned her that Devon had been abused. He was grateful for that, even though Devon still looked like he wanted nothing more than to run away. “I wasn’t sure whether or not you’d want me to tell my parents,” he began.

Devon shrugged. “I don’t see why you shouldn’t. This is important. They should know.”

“That’s what I was thinking. Still, I should have talked to you about it.”

Devon hesitated, then shook his head. “You don’t have to talk to me about everything. I understand why you wanted to tell your parents about me, and I’m not angry that you did.”

He might not be, but he still wasn’t comfortable, and Lorcan wasn’t sure what to do about it.

“Lorcan told us you were new in town,” Lorcan’s mom said.

She was staying away from Devon, at least physically, but it was obvious that she was trying to get to know him. The grocery store wasn’t the best place for that, especially since Devon had been surprised by their presence. Lorcan wasn’t sure what to do about it, though. He couldn’t exactly drag his mother away. She probably wouldn’t say anything about it, but it would look weird to others, and he didn’t know how Devon would react to it. He looked uncomfortable, but he also didn’t look like he loathed Lorcan’s mother for trying to talk to him.

Lorcan had no idea what to do.
