Corporal James Pollock VC.

General Haig was at Lieutenant-General Gough's headquarters when he heard of Thesiger's death. He immediately instructed Major-General Edward S Bulfin, whose 28th Division was approaching First Army area, to take over command of 9th Division's area of operations. Soon after Bulfin arrived at his new temporary command, orders arrived instructing a counterattack to take both Fosse and Dump Trenches. With his own troops deployed on route, Bulfin was to attack with what was left of 26 Brigade, numbering around six hundred men by this stage. Despite the ordeals of the past two days Brigadier-General Ritchie's troops advanced as asked. In the face of machine-gun and shellfire they were unable to progress any further than the eastern edge of Hohenzollen Redoubt. Their courage had, however, stiffen the resolve of the 73 Brigade, and for the time being Hohenzollen Redoubt remained in British hands. The fight for Fosse 8 and the redoubt had cost 26 Brigade dearly, over 2,100 Highlanders had been killed or wounded in less than seventy-two hours.
