CHAPTER 28

It was close to nine p.m. and Roy was pacing the office floor. He had ordered Sarah to go home and she had obeyed, reluctantly. He was alone now, and he felt exhausted. But that old gnawing guilt was back in his soul, nibbling away at the edges. He let Brian slip through his fingers. He’d never forgive himself if Brian killed someone now. The thought was giving him a headache. He downed the third cup of coffee and slammed it on the table.

Brian wasn’t Simon Bennett, the Armchair Killer. But if he did that to Stephanie, then that made him a copycat – and they could be the worst offenders. His mind was fighting for a way out of this dense jungle. He could see flashes of light through the trees, but the path still eluded him.

Brian must have a previous history that the police had missed. It happened all the time. By the time people reported a crime, the criminal was long gone. Brian had moved around, and it was possible he had assaulted women up and down the country, resulting in isolated PCNs, and none of them were linked. Serial killers often did that to evade justice, until they settled somewhere…like Brian had in Sheffield.

His phone beeped and he answered immediately.

‘DCI Roy.’

‘Hello, guv,’ said Sergeant David Bloomsdale, an experienced traffic officer. He had helped Roy numerous times in the past.

‘Brian’s car’s in the hotel car park. We’re searching for a two-seater black car, in case that’s Brian’s as well. As for the man himself, we got images of him walking down the back roads from the Sheaf Terminus, and getting on a bus. We can’t control the bus CCTV, and we’re trying to get hold of the footage.’

Roy smacked a fist against his thigh, and silenced a growl. ‘We must have some footage in the bus route, on the streets.’

‘We’re looking, guv. But I’m sorry, no sight as yet. He was wearing a black hooded top, dark jeans and trainers, right? Do you think he changed his outfit on the bus?’

‘I don’t know, but it’s possible. Keep looking.’

Roy hung up, and called the uniformed Inspector Hayden Booth. ‘Please keep a squad car outside the homes of Lorna Carpenter and Angela Dickinson till we find Brian.’

‘Will do. We have APBs out for Brian. No sight as yet on train stations. You know that though.’

‘Yes, I do. We need to find him ASAP.’

‘It’s getting late, Rohan. The lads are looking, but it’s been a long day.’

‘I know that.’ Roy raised his voice, unable to hide his frustration. ‘But he can’t have gone far.’

‘There’s CCTV dark spots even in town, Rohan. You know that. I’ve got cars patrolling all over. This will take time.’

Roy sighed, and rubbed his face. ‘Yes, I know. Thank you. Keep me posted.’

He hung up, and realised he had nothing to achieve by sitting around here. His frustration would only grow, and the last thing he wanted to do was head down to the pub, and down a couple of pints.
